South Korea Edges North Korea in World Cup Qualifier

It was good to see South Korea finally knock off North Korea:

Kim Chi-woo scored on a free kick in the 87th minute as the national soccer team edged North Korea 1-0 Wednesday night in Seoul World Cup Stadium.

In front of 48,366 fans, Kim unleashed a kick from the right side that curved toward the left corner of the goal. The North’s goalie Ri Myung-guk got a hand on the ball but it made its way into the net.

Kim also had a goal in the 2-1 exhibition win over Iraq Saturday.

South Korea retook the lead in Group B with 11 points and a goal difference of plus six, with the North second with ten points.

The win broke four straight ties between the two Koreas. The last win between both teams had been a 3-0 win by the South in a 1993 World Cup qualifier.

South Korea is seeking its seventh straight berth in the World Cup, while North Korea wants to play in its first tournament since 1966.

South Korea has three qualifiers left, including one against the United Arab Emirates in June.

South Korean coach Huh Jung-moo has a record of 10 wins, 10 ties in 20 games since taking over in November 2007.  KBS Global

The North Korean soccer strategy is like when the New Jersey Devils implemented "the trap". Watching them play is so boring. Actually trying to play for a tie is inexcusable. The players taking their sweet time with injuries. The game wasn't interesting until the South scored because the North went nuts fouling and doing whatever they could to get the ball. They were so aggressive finally. I wish they would have played like that earlier.

Extremely surprised that it wasn't yet another tie!

I would have bet good money on another draw as this game is

far too political to just be good sport.

Yes, shocking that it wasn't just a tie…AGAIN!
