Well so much for any tough action the Obama administration was saying they were going to get from the UN over North Korea’s rocket launch:
Japan’s Kyodo News reports the United States has shifted its stance and proposed issuing a U.N. Security Council (UNSC) presidential statement on North Korea’s rocket launch.
In a meeting of the five permanent members of the council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – and Japan, Washington proposed issuing a nonbinding presidential statement rather than a full-blown resolution, which may take an extended period of time.
Diplomatic sources said a draft statement drawn up by China expressed concerns on North Korea’s suspected launch of a long-range ballistic missile and simply reaffirmed a previous UNSC resolution 1718.
The move effectively hamstrung Tokyo’s hope of adopting a strong, binding resolution against Pyongyang. [KBS Global]
Maybe what the Obama administration should have done is threaten to bring John Bolton back to the UN if they didn’t get a resolution passed condeming North Korea. ![]()

Lets face it the UN and the US as well as Tokyo can hold their breath til their blue and stomp their feet, but there is “nothing” they can do, or ever could have done about it.
NK is well aware of that. It only makes the UN, US, and Tokyo look likes idiots pissing into the wind.

There are things that can be done:

There is just no political will to do them. The path of least resistance is to go to the UN and pretend we are doing something until the news cycle moves on.
