The Influence of North Korean Defector Radio Stations Continues to Grow

As interviews with North Korean defectors continues to show, the influence of defector radio stations in North Korea continues to grow however funding continues to be their problem:

Civilian-run, non-governmental radio broadcasts targeting the people of North Korea, which began back in 2005, have expanded to include four stations in just four years.

When radio broadcasts to North Korea started, the party which reacted first was the North Korean authorities. They demonstrated to the South Korean government, protesting that “this is a strategy to oppose the Republic (North Korea).” They even transmitted interference so as to disrupt the broadcasts. Such a reaction only demonstrates the significance of the influence that such radio broadcasts is capable of having on civilians.

Nevertheless, there are problems. These organizations have been receiving monetary assistance from the European Union, the U.S. Department of State and some private domestic organizations, but support from the South Korean government has been somewhere between highly inadequate and nil, despite the fact that if domestic frequencies are allocated to broadcasting companies in South Korea and the companies then transmit programs to the North, the level of reception in the North will be higher and the effect will be enhanced.  [The Daily NK via One Free Korea]

Make sure to read the rest of the interview that show cases a brief history of defector radio and its progress in South Korea despite many political road blocks, which have fortunately decreased under the Lee Myung-bak government.  The European Union and the United States provide funding for these broadcasts, but the donations are so small they only allow these stations to broadcast for a few hours each day.

I have long been an advocate of increasing radio broadcasts into North Korea in order to begin fighting the information war within the country. Radio broadcasts serve as a means to counter all the anti-US propaganda that North Koreans are fed on a daily basis and the effectiveness of these radio broadcasts can be proven by how some North Korean defectors, such as Kang Chol-hwan decided to defect after listening to these broadcasts.

just imagine what a statement it would make to Kim Jong-il if the Obama administration in response to the recent North Korea missile test decided to fund 24 hour programming for one of these defector radio stations?  That would be more punishment for North Korea then the worseless security council meetings that have amounted to nothing.

"Just imagine what a statement it would make to Kim Jong Il if Obama finded these stations 24/7.

Not likely as it would be seen as provocotive. It would also fly in the face of maintaining the status quo.

Talks are what the current administration wants along with treaties and agreements.

In the interum its stomp your feet and make useless proclimations and visit the useless UN to plead our displeasure.

There is no indication that anything other than the status quo will continue as usual. North Korea is safe for at least four more years.
