The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions In Crisis as Membership Shrinks

Watching the slow motion desolving of the KCTU in recent months has actually been more rewarding then watching the on going corruption probe into former Korean President Roh Moo-hyun take place:

The Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) appears to be sinking deeper into trouble as affiliated labor unions quit their membership in protest over corruption in the group’s leadership.

Unions for the Incheon International Airport Corp. and the Incheon Rapid Transit Corp., a subway operator in the port city west of Seoul, said Friday their unionized workers approved the two labor groups’ withdrawal from the KCTU in votes tallied late in the day.  [Yonhap]

For those that don’t know, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions has long served as the muscle for the Korean left as well as being an organization infiltrated by North Korea and its apologists.  For example the KCTU were key players in the effort to stop the USFK base expansion at Camp Humphreys.  They launched violent protests that left much destruction and injuries in their wake.  Most recently they were the muscle behind the fraudulent US beef protests that nearly toppled the current Korean government.

It should come as no surprise that the current conservative Lee Myung-bak government since taking power a year ago has made it an effort to take on the KCTU.  The Lee government after exposing the fraudulent US beef mad cow claims went and arrested the ring leaders of the protests to include the President of the KCTU.  The Lee government has also cut government subsidies that the prior corrupt Roh Moo-hyun government was sending to the KCTU.  Other scandals surrounding the KCTU has only further reduced the membership roles of this group of leftist thugs.

This is good news on the anti-US front.

It has also become clear over the past 5 to 10 years that the radical student union has lost a fair amount of power and pull on campus and in the society.

These are the two groups that have long provided the shock troops for the anti-US and pro-North fronts.

It is encouraging to see them losing influence in the society.
