Seoul to Soon Announce Joining PSI

Now here is something that could really have some consequences for North Korea if Seoul actually fully implements it:

The government will soon announce its full participation in the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).

Foreign Ministry spokesman Moon Tae-young said Monday that the government is mulling PSI participation as a way to take part in the global effort to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including missiles.

The government will announce its decision after assessing the U.N. Security Council’s response to North Korea’s April fifth rocket launch.

Moon said Seoul has informed Washington and other allies of its plan to join the PSI and has consulted with them on the matter.  [KBS Global]

This is a pretty significant step if Seoul decides to join the PSI because this would mean that South Korea would be willing to detain and inspect North Korean ships.  If South Korea was to begin inspecting North Korean ships expect tensions to increase dramatically on the peninsula with North Korea doing something quite provocative in response.

Now ask yourself, even if South Korea joins the PSI does anyone really think they will begin inspecting North Korean ships for WMD materials?
