Korea Bans Imports of Chinese Beef

Does anyone think there will be mass protest against the tainted Chinese beef that was being sold in Korea like there was over the US beef nonsense?:

Concerned over the presence of a potentially harmful chemical in Chinese beef stock widely used for soups, South Korea banned its import.

National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service chief Lee Joo-Ho announced the food ministry’s decision at a press conference on Tuesday.

A laboratory examination of the imported beef stock proved that it contained Clenbuterol, a chemical that can cause a rapid pulse, stomachache, and various heart-related disorders, he said.

Most of the 17 shipments, which were subject to scrutiny last week, were tainted with the hazardous chemical, he added.

It was immediately followed by a temporary ban on the Chinese product.

The South Korean food ministry also ordered a recall of beef stock that was imported since April 6.

‘The government has asked China to find the cause of the contamination,’ Joo-Ho told reporters.

Processed meat products such as smoked duck and sausage, imported from China, are also being recalled and tested in the wake of the finding.  [NASDAQ]

This is not the first time China has been caught shipping tainted food, but the Korean government would eventually back off from the ban in the wake of Chinese retaliation such as in the Garlic War of 2000 and the Kimchi Crisis of 2005.  With these past Chinese tainted food scares there was no activists out on the streets protesting for food safety or students holding signs saying they want to live. It will be the same thing this time as well.

I guess Korea will have to decide if they prefer US, Austrailian, or Chinese beef products. What goes around comes around.

Why should there be any protests? The K government is doing their job and banning the dangerous food.
