Some Thoughts On Tea Parties and Media Bias

» by GI Korea in: Journalism

I didn’t really think the tax day “Tea Parties” promoted on the Internet, the radio, and Fox News would amount to much, but they did actually draw some good crowds from what I could see on the news.  Of course the left is down playing the turn out as not meeting expectations, but apparently turnout was less then 250,000 and maybe as low as 100,000. The same game over attendance numbers is being played here as the leftist groups play with their protests.

I do find it interesting though that people are complaining about out of control spending now and not when President Bush was in office granted President Obama is planning to spend the country into federal deficits even greater then Bush ever did.  Something else I didn’t like was seeing kids and babies brought to these protests as well.  Some of these kids I saw were school age children.  Were they released from school to go to a protest?  I don’t like it when the leftist protesters use kids as political props and I equally don’t like people on the right using kids as props as well.  However, what I found most of interest with these protests is how the media portrayed it.  If this event doesn’t show what a bias media we have in the US then nothing will.

First of all look at how the Associated Press led off their story about the Tea Parties:

Republicans have lost their grip on Congress and the White House, but they claim to have American anger over taxes and the economy on their side as tens of thousands turned out for anti-tax “tea parties” around the country.

Wednesday’s rallies used the dreaded April 15 — the U.S. deadline to file income taxes — as a hook to vent about government spending and corporate bailouts in an homage to the Boston Tea Party.

The tea parties were promoted by FreedomWorks, a conservative nonprofit advocacy group based in Washington and led by former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas, who is now a lobbyist.

Organizers said the movement developed organically through online social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and through exposure on Fox News and promotion from conservative pundits and bloggers.

While FreedomWorks insisted the rallies were nonpartisan, they have been seized on by many prominent Republicans who view them as a promising way for the party to reclaim its momentum against President Barack Obama’s administration and other Democrats.

“All you have to be is a mildly awake Republican candidate for office to get in front of that parade,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

Some Republicans considering 2012 presidential bids and others with upcoming campaigns for state and congressional offices hitched a ride with the movement.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took the podium in front of New York’s City Hall while the crowd of about 2,000 chanted, “We are America!”

He urged people to tell their lawmakers to vote against big spending or else “we’re going to fire you.”

As the former House speaker left after his 11-minute speech, passers-by yelled, “2012, Newt!” and “Run for president!” But when asked about a run, Gingrich shook his head emphatically and said, “I’m just part of a citizen movement.”  [Associated Press]

Notice how the AP made sure to portray the protests as some kind of Republican stunt orchestated by behind the scenes conservative groups to kick start Presidential campaigns.  This was a narrative being spread on other news of the event I saw as well.  I don’t have a problem with the media stating if a conservative group is organizing the protests by the way, people have the right to know, my beef is why doesn’t the media explain who is orchestrating behind the scenes the protests of left wing organizations?

medea-benjamin

Code Pink's Founder Medea Benjamin

For example how come the mainstream media never points out the Cuban connections behind the Code Pink organization that has been holding protests against the Iraq War and for any other left wing cause they support?  The group’s founder Medea Benjamin is a long time left wing activist who lived in Cuba and is married to a pro-Castro Cuban.  Benjamin once told the San Francisco Chronicle that Cuban life “made it seem like I died and went to heaven.”  Yet here I see her trotted out on all these networks without one person in the media challenging her on her left wing Cuban connections.

Appeal for Redress Founder Jonathan Hutto at Amnesty International Protest Before Joining the Navy.

Also how come the media didn’t expose the backers of the Appeal for Redress group which touted itself as a grassroots effort by US servicemembers to end the War in Iraq that just happened to be formed before the 2006 Congressional elections?  This group was far from being a grassroots effort with Appeal for Redress organized and run by Amnesty International plants and promoted by the largest liberal media public relations company, Fenton Communications that just so happens to be receiving George Soros money.

Speaking of George Soros, why doesn’t the media expose the multiple causes that George Soros has been funding through his web of front groups such as MoveOn.org, the National Priorities Project and the Center for Public Integrity?   My favorite is the recent AIG protesters who were in fact nothing more then left wing activist from the voter fraud linked group ACORN who recently received access to billions of dollars in possible subsidies through the Congressional bailout package.

Now back to the tea bag protests, take a look at how this CNN reporter Susan Roesgen covered this protest:

However, is anyone surprised to hear that when people on the left are protesting with the demonization of former President George Bush, this CNN reporter Susan Roesgen was sympathetic to them.

Of course CNN is also playing the race card in regards to these protests as well.

Now if you just think it is the left wing networks that are bias then check this out as well:

I could go on and on, but I think everyone gets the point that if the media is going to point out the organizations and motives behind the tea bag protests then they should be pointing out the organizations and motives behind all the protests which is something they collectively have not done.

As this event shows, the TV media has become nothing more then political organs of both the right and left and is the reason why I hardly watch any TV news any more.  This situation is becoming similar to what you see with the TV news broadcasters in Korea that are nothing more then mouth pieces for their political supporters as well.  The US media hasn’t gotten corrupt enough to cause a nation wide panic like what we saw last summer in Korea, but how much longer will it be before the US media becomes corrupt enough to begin to incite mass panic without thinking twice about it?

Here in Dayton,Ohio we had more than 6,000 and they are not only Republicans, they come from the Democratic party as well. People are pissed off that congress passed the “porkulas” bill without even reading it and after hearing it had over 9,000 earmarks in it.

Both CNN and MSNBC were all in lib heaven last night as their coverage just kept spouting the demostrations were only by disgruntled Republicans. Oberman (sp) was just spewing and Mathews was just as bad.

I think the event clearly showed how polorized the media is. There is no longer any attempt at trying to portray middle of the road, when it has become blatently obvious numerous networks are very biased. (in either direction)

I am curious as where this will take the country as the split between left and right is growing in magnetude.
