Yongsan soldiers are making a name for themselves apparently with their local English teaching program:
The ‘Elementary English Experience Center’, in which USFK servicemembers directly teach English to elementary students, is becoming famous in Yongsan District region. It is beneficial for students and their parents to reduce private education fees, and it is helpful for the USFK to improve the ROK-US friendship.
Six units of USFK are participating in this English education program
The Yongsan District Office announced April 21st that English classes are run by exceptional English teachers of the USFK in six schools, including Bo-gwang, Nam-jeong and Shin-yong-san Elementary School.
The English Center is held as regular and after-school classes. 24 servicemembers from the USO, 8 from the 94th MP Battalion, 4 from the USAG-Y Command, 6 from the 65th Medical Brigade, 8 from the 42th Signal Battalion and 2 from the 501st MI Brigade volunteered for English teachers.
A US servicemember and a KATUSA soldier make a group, and they give various types of lectures to students. In Bo-gwang Elementary School, 12 US soldiers and 12 KATUSAs of the USO teaches the entire fifth and sixth graders (330 students in 12 classes) from 10:30 a.m. for an hour on every other Saturday. Also in Nam-jeong Elementary School, soldiers of the USAG-Y Command give lectures to 80 students in 8 classes from 13:50 p.m. for two hours every Thursday.
Students comfortably talk with teachers when they are about to graduate
Students learn not only the language but also cultural difference between Korea and the US through the ‘English experience classes’. Just before their graduation, they do not feel any difficulties to talk with foreigners, the Yongsan Office explained. [USFK.mil]
