ATEK Press Release On Plagiarism Charges

The Association for Teachers of English in Korea has now issued a press releases in regards to the plagiarism charges that have been lodged against the organization:

Foreign teachers association responds to plagiarism charges

(Seoul, South Korea) – The Association for Teachers of English in Korea (ATEK), a professional organization that provides a voice for foreign teachers, responded to allegations of plagiarism in their newly published English Teacher’s Guide to Korea.

ATEK Press, a division of the association, published the guidebook to help teachers adjust to life in Korea, including advice about laws, culture, and the Korean language. Plagiarism was first alleged on Hub of Sparkle, a popular weblog for expatriates living in South Korea.

The association identified the passages that lacked appropriate citation in the Teacher’s Guide to Korea and contacted the writers who were not correctly credited. The electronic version of the book has been edited to reflect this.

“As principal author and editor of the manual, Tony Hellmann has taken full responsibility, and has acted professionally to resolve the issue,” said Tom Rainey-Smith, President and Chair of the Founding Board.

ATEK takes this issue very seriously,” said Rainey-Smith. “All of the authors concerned have been contacted, and those who have responded have indicated that we are resolving the issue to their satisfaction.”

Rob Dickey, a long-time editor for numerous professional publications in the US and Korea and a past president of Korea TESOL, observed that, “these things sometimes happen in in-house publications, where there just isn’t enough time and too few proofreaders who are aware of the issues.”

“In the publishing industry, there is money for trained proofreaders available on demand so the standards are higher, but in cases like this, where a book is being produced on a grant for non-profit purposes, it’s important that the error is acknowledged and corrections are made,” Dickey added.

ATEK president, Rainey-Smith notes that the edits were made immediately and the next printing has already been altered to include the proper citations.

Since the advent of the Internet as a research tool, students, journalists, and publishers have had to adapt to the often difficult task of identifying sources on a website. Many times it is unclear who the original author is, and many younger people regard information found online as public domain.

In this case, ATEK says the mistakes were unintentional and that they were aware of the publishing standards.

Some statements were not properly attributed,” said Tony Hellmann, ATEK Communications Director and principal author. “Those statements were in sections I wrote, so the responsibility rests solely with me.”

“The English Teacher’s Guide to Korea used footnotes to cite sources, and a number of un-sourced passages in the first two chapters were discovered to have come from online sources, including Wikipedia,” said Hellmann.

ATEK’s founding board plans to continue organizing and providing support and advice to many teachers on a daily basis. Currently, membership drives are taking place in every province and a national council has been established to take over the day-to-day running of the association.

“It’s important that we remember that the needs of members and potential members are our focus during this kind of public discussion,” said Rainey-Smith. “We look forward to learning and growing as an organization as a result of every challenge.”

As an ESL teacher, the more I heard about Tony Hellmann, his plagiarism, stories on BDSM, running from immigration and lying, the more I felt that ATEK and I had different views on what is right for English teachers.

I need some help here, I am trying to track down Vinny Greenier who is an English teacher (or was) in Korea.

    ht tp://www.facebook.com/people/Vinny-Greenier/761132555

Tony Hellmann, under his pen name Archer904, wrote a BDSM story about Vinny and I wanted to see how Vinny felt about that.

    ht tp://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=261622

Vinny, if you read this, did you give Tony permission to do that? How do you feel about that?

Oh, RLY? So when I attended college, my excuse for plagiarism (had I plagiarized) could have been my lack of professional proofreaders? That’s pretty lame.

This is a teacher and he should be held to a higher standard. I would also imagine the author would know how to properly cite information obtained electronically and know how to do so.

This is the ultimate academic crime.

    No, no free ride here.

The problem with foreign English teachers in Korea is that the action of some individuals shed a negative image on the rest of them.
As my mom used to say bad impression are stronger than the good ones.
English teachers really need someone to guide and represent them before korean society, but ATEK seem not to be up to the job until now.

Tony Hellmann works for a university so I would assume that he has a clue as to what plagiarism is.

First does anybody know VINNY or Vincent Greenier in Korea, Daegu? Vinny, how does it feel to have Tony use you as a character in his BDSM stories.

Jason, that is the problem. Tony did much much more then that. Then lied about it, then had his boy-toys like you lie some more.

Brian, you are doing what all the ATEK trolls do. Push propaganda and shut out debate. This is why people like me are really fighting ATEK.

First, the adult literature was posted by an ex-girlfriend to get back at me. And, there is nothing wrong with BDSM adult literature anyway. If people choose to read that, which I have never read or seen.

Second, I have plagiarized nothing. I was the editor and I was in a hurry, and just missed a few things.

Third, I have been attacked by the racist’s on Dave’s esl, much the same way MLK and Rosa Parks were attacked. Someday, schools all over Korea will be named after me for freeing the English teachers.

Please can we keep this filth off this board. Keep it to Daves Cafe where it belongs.

Non profit organization releases a manual to help foreign ESL teachers adjust to life as a teacher in S. Korea. A country known to not be entirely friendly to foreigners. Said publication lacked source references on some (not all) of its content.

Mistake discovered, noted and material revised to contain the correct references. Future releases of the material will contain the corrections and proper sources have been noted. Editor who missed the mistakes has apologized.

Mind you this is a NON-PROFIT organization, with MOST of its work done by volunteer’s. Really you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. If they where trying to SELL it to make money that would be one thing, but they are not. There is no profit or money being made here, nothing ethically wrong. No heinous crime committed. So stop trying to be judge / jury / executioner and attempting to hang this guy for what is essentially a community service.

    Ya know…

I know nothing about Tony Hellman… well… except he made my first adult BDSM fiction experience less creepy than I expected.

Further, I know nothing about ATEK or it’s goals.

But one thing I do know is that every time ATEK comes up, there is a massive personal attack against Tony Hellman… but there is never a peep about any bad things ATEK might be doing that are deserving of criticism.

Whenever I see this pattern of attacking the messenger but not the message, I get suspicions.

Could somebody with a dog in this fight kindly enlighten me as to why ATEK is bad? Bonus points if Tony’s personal life is not involved.

I’m equally in the dark about all the specific people and orgs mentioned so far, and I’m not inclined to go over to Dave’s and Google to become informed — but — my wild guess —

    — I’d bet much of this is between one camp that has always been in the ESL and expat community who —– can’t stand to see another expat bad mouth (something about) Korea.

This was always a recurring theme at Dave’s – and we’ve seen in on the other K-blogs often enough in the past two – especially when a spike in anti-US activity is taking place and the blogs start talking about it….

….there are always a few who get all bent out of shape and go on a crusade to put the complainers in their place — usually by telling them to “Love it or leave it” and that “as guests of Korea!!” nobody has any business saying anything critical – and thus becoming “anti-Korean”.

So, given the fact that ATEK has as two of its stated primary purposes of informing potential and current ESLers about some of the pitfalls you might encounter in Korea + helping to organize disgruntled ESLers to help possibly bring about reforms through pressure —- my bet is that a significant portion of the hatred of it and its members stems from attacks by die-hard Korea defenders….

I do add — I see no reason to lump ESLTeacher in that group. He/she has mentioned some specific reasons he hates the other guy…

    I can’t take any more.

    ESLTeacher… StFUaGBtW.

…but before you do that, go back and look at all your posts.

They are composed of fragments and run-on sentences with missing punctuation and hideous structure. Only the saddest excuse for an ESL “teacher” could naturally write this poorly with this consistency… as it should be second nature for any real teacher not to make these mistakes.

This makes your criticism of Tony as a teacher especially amusing.

If it makes you feel better, Tony’s reply not only had a few conceptual turn-offs but was also filled with elementary mistakes that would subconsciously be avoided by any real teacher even in a quickly written first draft.

So… the whole deal is like watching the class hillbilly argue with the class pseudo-intellectual geek about who would win in a fight between Jesus and the Hulk… but with substantially less interesting subject material.

If you have a juicy story to tell, spit it out. If you think Tony is a jerkoff, say exactly why. Just remember, you get double points for issues that relate to him professionally or the faults of ATEK… rather than what kind of dirty stories he may or may not like to write on his own time.

Otherwise, quit rambling on about Vinny Greenier every time you have a few beers and a couple hits of the bong.

    To everyone else…

    The prosecution rests.

I can’t figure out for the life of me why you’re wasting your time trying to embarrass, belittle, and berate Tony. Seriously, whatever your beef with Tony, let it go.

However, I do know a little about Tony and his past so allow me to share [collective gasp]. Tony is not my friend and we don’t see eye to eye on much, but I will say that I know Tony to be an intelligent and enthusiastic individual who has always demonstrated dedication and preseverance in everything he has done. I once watched Tony run a 10k marathon on a mangled ankle. As for something a bit more relevant, I was working with Tony when he was helping to form the foundation of ATEK. Even though everybody was telling him it couldn’t be done, it was unwanted, or that it would get him deported, he stayed the course and committed himself to creating something he believed would truly benefit the ELT community. On several occasions, like this one, Tony admitted his mistakes and tried to do the right thing in response. He has made mistakes and has admitted to them. Tony is not my favorite person in the world, but if you thought I would join this board and flame him you’re even more infantile that I imagined. Tony, keep your head up mate and please remain dedicated to helping ATEK succeed and serve its mission. ESLTeacher – seriously, get a hobby.

I’m no fan of sexual preditors, at all, but from looking at those case files, if the man in them were a “sexual preditor”, the state would have done more than yank his license – he’d have been arrested for breaking the law.

These were “at risk” children. They don’t make the best witnesses in court. They come from physically and sexually abusive families. The reason why he got the other charges of failing to follow the rules with at-risk youth is because he wanted to claim ignorance, and create a “he said-she said” situation where he will be believed more then some street trash children. He knows damn well he should never be alone in a bedroom wthh a underage girl like that. Its part of the training. Everyone knows that a adult male councelor should not do that. This kind of thing is lowest of the low. I hope he is not around children.

At a minimum, his work should be notified, does anybody know where he works and his employer? (provide a link of public information only)

Well, at least this relates to him professionally as chickenhead requested.

This article states that Mr. Hellmann had his counselor’s license revoked in the State of Washington for having an inappropriate relationship with an underage client. So perhaps James A. Hellmann is a serial child molester, perhaps he was in the wrong place at the wrong, or perhaps he overstepped his professional boundaries sincerely trying to help someone who didn’t want his help – perhaps she lied. The point is “Onewhoknows,” you don’t know and neither do I. But don’t you think if Tony was a child predator the state of Washington would have done a little more than merely strip him of his license.
I can’t figure out why you’re so hell-bent on humiliating Tony. He must have done something to truly ruin your life. I feel sorry for you.
So feel free to hide in the anonymity of the blogosphere and attempt to defame anyone who has ever made you angry. But my advice to you would be to stop being so small and to use your time more constructively. The fact that you spend so much time and energy trying to humiliate Tony says far more about your character than you could ever say about his. And please don’t say that you’re concerned about the truth or the children of Korea. If that were true than you should be doing far more than smearing his name on this little blog – but you’re not, are ya? It is evident that your intent is malicious – and you are well aware that it is as well. Okay – you don’t like Tony. We got it. Could you kindly bemoan in private.

On 25 — again, I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to go easy on a sex offender or sex offenders as a group – I was a victim as a child — but…we should be more clear on some of this since we are accusing a specific person here. (I’d add – a person I don’t know and didn’t know squat about until reading this thread….I have no dog in this hunt….)

The age of consent here in Georgia, and in a fair number of other states in the US, is 16. (I just checked, and the age of consent in Washington state is also 16). Just about every year here, I hear about some idiot and asshole teacher getting fired for having sex with a student but they don’t usually get arrested, I seem to remember, unless the girl is under 16.

I also remember reading in the book Bias about the media how some reporter or producer contacted the author because she had run into trouble with higher ups at – CNN I believe it was – on issues related to the Catholic priest scandals: CNN and the rest of the media kept calling it a priest “pedophile” issue but she pointed out that pedophiles – by definition – are sex offenders who prey on children — whereas the priest were by and large having sex with teenage boys. Manipulating their minds and using their position as priests to be sure and immoral and an outrage, but not exactly the same as sexually abusing a 6 year old.

The book Bias most likely correctly pointed out that the reason the woman got crushed for pointing out this fact was that the media did not want to get in trouble with the gay lobby or even remotely appear to be prejudice against gays by sounding like they were saying the priests were just gay men having consensual sex with teenagers. (As far as the law goes, in many states, like here in Georgia, no matter how old the boy was, the priest having sex with him would have been technically illegal, because sodomy is still technically illegal. I believe adultery is also still technically on the law books but also never used). The media avoided the problem by lumping the priests in with the definition of pedophile – which didn’t fit.

Anyway, when we use the word “children” we have to be more clear in cases like this. Especially since the point I brought up was about the law and how the specific case file linked above did not show that the person was arrested for breaking the law.

I’d think, if the man had sex with someone under 16 in Washington (or Georgia), he would have been arrested as well as have his license revoked. I’d give a wild guess the state would be as worried about getting sued as it would about losing the case in a criminal court due to the nature of the main witness. How could the state explain in a civil court that it felt there was enough evidence to suspend his license for having sex with someone below the age of consent but didn’t trust the evidence enough to arrest the man for the same thing?

It seems more likely to me the victim (and I’d say a teenager would be a victim – especially someone in the kind of emotionally mixed up state as this) in this case was above the age of consent. And would definitely warrant yanking a license – and would warrant strong moral outrage.

As for contacting schools — looking at the situation compared to the US, a man who had his counselor license revoked like this would not have been able to get a teaching license to begin with. If he was on paper for having had sex with a minor – even above the age of consent – he wouldn’t have a prayer of getting the teaching license he’d need to teach in a high school or any other public school.

Just remembered — in reference to the specifics of this case, if I remember correctly, the documents don’t mention sexual intercourse at all — that the accusations were about inappropriate touching and inappropriate personal contact (being alone in the minor’s bedroom).

And as one of my former presidents pointed out, inappropriate touching is not having sexual relations – by definition.

So, I’m guessing, even if the girl in the case were under 16 – the age of consent in Washington – I’m not sure the state would have any laws it could prosecute the guy under…???…

Maybe one of the readers who is also a lawyer could speak on that….? Several of the regular K-bloggers/commenters are lawyers…

I haven’t taught Korean children in Korea since 2000, but from my experience, it was not unusual at all to have the youngest kids want to hug and even kiss you.

I remember a day clearly when a pre-school aged girl came up to my desk at a hakwon and wanted to kiss me on the cheek — I paused a few seconds and thought, “There is no way in hell I’d do this in the US……should I do it here???” and then let her kiss me on the cheek and hug my neck. A couple of other girls came up to hug my neck and/or kiss my cheek.

Generally, it didn’t happen with every class, but I seem to remember that if one of them got the idea to do it and the others saw it — it became something some of them in the class would want to do occasionally from then on…

To which Chickenhead replied:USinKorea… you never fail to creep me out with stories of your teacher-student interactions.

    What next?

My rule of thumb, the worse the offense you are going to charge against someone, the better your facts and evidence should be. One example, I’ve been saying at a couple of conservative blogs (in the US) that they should drop the childish calling of Obama “Dear Leader” — they demean the reality of what people have suffered and obscure the understanding of the real evil.

That is actually the only interest I’ve had in this thread. I didn’t know anything about Hellmann before it and don’t really care. All I’ve been saying here under this topic is that we should all be more clear and specific about what we’re talking about and what accusations are being made.

Did you really have those two comments of mine from years ago in mind when you tried to discredit anything I’ve said in this thread by implying a slanderous accusation or did you go googling for them after the fact? Considering both links were given with the coedmagazine one coming in between…

Whatever the case, I have no problem – none at all – with your bringing those two examples up.

I’ve been posting and commenting in the K-blogs for a long time. I’ve said a lot and I’ve said a thing or two over the years that embarrassed myself and I’d liked to have taken back —- but you won’t find anything in all these years where I’ve joked about or played around with the topic of sex crimes or sex offenders or something similar — for the reason I just explained above…

    – By the way, for other readers who haven’t checked out the one link he offered to justify why he made that snipit accusation in comment #28, the comment at Marmot’s was where I told about the two times adult women had told someone I had had done something I hadn’t: one nut at a hakwon in Korea tried to tell my manager that I had “sexually harassed” her then got upset when several teachers in the school were talking with me and the manager about the scene the nut had made. She was one of the few expat ESLers I met in four years in Korea who had some real, major issues, and thankfully she did the midnight run some weeks later after wearing out her welcome with all the other staff members – Korean and foreign.

The other was a girl in college who, apparently when she realized I wasn’t going to ask her out on another date, started telling her friends I was “stalking” her. Nobody bothered to inform me of this, not even my best friend at the time who lived on the same dorm hall, until after the girl and I had graduated and left the school — too late for me to defend myself against something I take very seriously.

Abused, the fact you put up that coedmagazine link and snidely said “lets lighten up a bit” — again shows much about your credibility.

Too bad we couldn’t be having this conversation face to face…

For other readers, if you look at that link and read the comments from the thread Abused pulled the quote from me and Chickenhead —

    — you’ll see that it was actually an informed, detailed discussion mostly involving people with experience teaching children in Korea and some who had taught children in both Korea and the US — with the discussion being about differences in the culture involving what is considered acceptable and unacceptable signs of affection between teacher and student.

Several people talked about similar personal examples they have had teaching kids in Korea as the one I offered which Abused quoted.

I, again, have no problem with what I said then or now.

To have Abused use it as an excuse for the crass accusation he used here to discredit what I’ve been saying in this thread connected with this Hellman is BS….

Marcus Ambrose December 9th, 2009 at 4:34 pmThank goodness. It is amusing reading all of the rants from the holier than thou crowd, and even makes me laugh, which is why I read it. The whole group from the Philippines ranting and raving here prove the saying “give them enough rope and they will hang themselves”.

Retired GI December 9th, 2009 at 12:33 pmWOW!!! “Can’t figure it out” is an UNDERSTATEMENT! Now I understand why the Philippines will always be a Third World Country. Sad. Otherwise it is a beautiful place. Yes, it looks like philipina girl was liar. “she might have welcomed his sexual advances at the Neptune Club in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.” SHE WELCOMED IT. SHE WANTED IT. SHE GO
