The Dodong-ri Cable Car
From the Dokdo Museum my wife and I headed over to the nearby cable car station to catch a ride up to the top of one of the cliffs that tower over the Ulleungdo village of Dodong-ri:
The ride up as you can imagine was quite scenic:
From the top of the cliff we had a bird’s eye view down on the harbor of Dodong-ri. Notice how steep and rugged the sides of the cliffs are that extend out into the ocean:
There are very few beach areas on Ulleungdo and nearly the whole island is as rugged as these cliffs. Looking into the interior of the island you can see how the residents of Ulleungdo pretty much all live on hill sides:
When visiting Ulleungdo you need to get used to walking up and down hills. Here is the view looking towards the summit of the highest point on the mountain Seonginbong Peak which rises to a heighth of 984 meters (3,228 feet):
The entire island is about 28 square miles and you can see about half them from up here on the peak. From the top of the peak there are also a few trails that go to different look outs on the cliffs:
The island is thickly forested which is evident by the above pictures. From the various look outs you get some nice views of the Ulleungdo coastline:
Notice the large unusual rock sticking up in the below picture:
After walking around and checking out the various hiking trails my wife and I then took the cable car back down the mountain and then went on the look out for sashimi.

If you go to this place, make sure you buy a confirmed round-trip ticket. My wife and I went there in 2000 and were stuck on the island for a week. I went through a lot of money while waiting for the next ferry off this rock. I suspect the locals are not eager to let you go if you have money. They kept claiming it was because of rough weather conditions; I never totally believed it.

The same thing happened to me. I was stuck there for 4 extra days because of the weather. Then the day I finally got to leave I almost didn't because of line cutting ajummas that bum rushed the line:
