ROK Army Golf Scandal Update

Here is another update on the ROK Army medical officers that were court martialed for playing golf during duty hours.  The more information that comes out the worst this scandal becomes:

South Korea’s military has sacked its medical command chief and court-martialled 50 military doctors for playing golf while on duty, officials said on Friday.

The defence ministry said a two-star general overseeing the medical command was dismissed last week for failing to prevent the misconduct.

It will also take “disciplinary action” against five military hospital chiefs and the head of a medical training facility on similar charges, spokesperson Won Tae-Jae said.

Military prosecutors have investigated 180 doctors in the past three months for playing golf, he said.

Of those, 32 were punished by their commanders and 50 court-martialled – with 35 put on probation, three given suspended prison terms and 12 still on trial.

They could face a prison term of up to a year if convicted.

Able-bodied young Korean men face conscription into the 680 000-strong military, with qualified medical students usually serving as doctors.

Golf has gained popularity in South Korea, which has several world stars. But it is still seen in some quarters as a sport for the idle rich and for people seeking to peddle influence.

In 2006 then-prime minister Lee Hae-Chan stepped down after a golf outing with businessmen sparked a criminal investigation into alleged influence-peddling.

In 2007 the air force chief resigned after playing golf while the country was mourning the death of a Korean soldier in Afghanistan.  [News 24]

That is an amazing number 180 officers being punished over this golf scandal.  It makes you wonder how long it has been going on and how wide spread it is?

    “…people seeking to peddle influence.”

I can go along with that definition, and it’s not just the ROK army, unfortunately.
