Some Children to Removed from DODDS in Seoul

» by in: USFK

If you are non-command sponsored and have kids in school you may want to read this:

Children of non-command-sponsored troops might not be able to attend Department of Defense Dependents schools in Seoul next year due to a lack of space, as more servicemembers bring their families to South Korea.

The space crunch could affect 60 or more students in Seoul, based on current and projected enrollment figures. Students in DODDS schools in Pyeongtaek, Daegu and Chinhae are not expected to be affected by the overcrowding, acting South Korea superintendent Doug Kelsey said.

“We have plenty of capacity in those communities,” he said.

Under a new policy announced by U.S. Forces Korea in December, about half of the 28,500 billets for U.S. troops in South Korea will eventually be command-sponsored. The first wave of families moving to South Korea under the new policy arrives this summer, and the number of command-sponsored slots is expected to roughly double to 4,320 by the end of fiscal year 2010.  [Stars & Stripes]

Another good reason why less than savory characters might want to decimate the contractor population; you know, thin the herd a bit. Between this and the spouse hiring preferences, it's all starting to come together.

GI, didn't you recently do a story on the non-USFK-Embassy-affiliated students? How much do you want to bet – they will still be enrolled when the non-command sponsored are gone?

The excuse will be something like "The command feels allowing certain Koreans to send their kids to SAHS builds better community relations….."

Some may want to get ready to write their congressman

Dont' worry about the contrators. Most of the commands here have been given marching orders to either elimnate contract positions or convert them to DACs accross the board.

Too bad you need six GS-14s to do the same amount of work as one contractor. I love big government!!!!
