A high school girl who earned her school fees by working as the
proprietress of a bar here has been arrested and sent to public
prosecutors, law enforcers said.

The 18-year-old girl was arrested and sent to prosecutors along with
the bar’s operator on suspicion of violating the Law Regulating Adult
Entertainment Businesses. Police accuse the pair of operating an
establishment without permission, and employing juveniles.

Investigators said the high school girl started working at the bar
in Sapporo’s Atsubetsu Ward in October last year, when she was 17. She
was able to handle jobs such as arranging the work of eight female
employees, including those older than her, and she rose to the position
of bar manager in about three months.

The arrested pair are accused of having female employees entertain
customers at an establishment in Sapporo’s Atsubetsu Ward on the night
of May 25 without obtaining official permission from the Hokkaido
Public Safety Commission. The arrested operator allegedly employed four
females under the age of 18, including the high school student, while
the high school student was in charge of an interview for one of the
girls.

Atsubetsu Police Station officials said that the 18-year-old was
enrolled as a correspondence course student. She had been working at
bars for about two years, earning money for living and school expenses.
She reportedly handled business enthusiastically, obtaining a
qualification as a food sanitation supervisor, and contributed to the
success of the business.
