South Korea Denies Inter-Korea Summit Proposed By the North

As usual the North Koreans are continuing to follow their usual playbook by this time possibly proposing an Inter-Korean summit with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak:

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is fully prepared and ready to hold an inter-Korean summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il if conditions are met, but no such summit has been proposed by either side, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said Monday.

The remarks came in response to reports by the country’s major dailies that the North Korean leader proposed a summit with Lee in a verbal message delivered Sunday by a group of North Korean delegates who came to pay respects to late former President Kim Dae-jung.  [Yonhap]

If Lee was to go to Pyongyang it would be yet another propaganda coup for Kim Jong-il.  There is probably no one more villified within North Korea than Lee Myung-bak.  With him going to Pyongyang it will look like that not only did Kim Jong-il get the mighty Americans to bow down to him with his visit with Bill Clinton, but even the evil Lee Myung-bak has decided to bow down to the Dear Leader as well.

I continue to believe that Lee Myung-bak should turn the tables on the North Koreans and offer a Inter-Korean Summit in Seoul like Kim Jong-il promised to do during the first Inter-Korean Summit with Kim Dae-jung.  Lee should continuously hold Kim Jong-il to his word and make him come to Seoul if he wants to talk.

It is without question that any further summit will have to take place in Seoul if North Korea is serious about reconciliation.
