Fortunately the four South Korean fishermen held hostage by North Korea for the past month have finally been released:
Four South Korean fishermen were headed home Saturday aboard their boat after being released from 30 days of detention in North Korea, the latest move to ease tension on the divided Korean Peninsula.
North Korea set free the Southern fishing boat, the Yeonan-ho, at the eastern sea border at 5 p.m., South Korea’s maritime police said in a news release, in a move that cleared a major roadblock in inter-Korean relations. [Yonhap]
Like I said earlier this week this release will coincide with an agreement to rehold family reunions between the two Koreas:
Two hundred separated families in South and North Korea will reunite next month at Mt. Geumgang, negotiators for the Red Cross societies agreed Friday.
According to a joint statement that came out after three days of summit meetings, 100 families each from the North and South will meet their families, and reunite at Mt. Geumgang between Sept. 26 and Oct 1.
The union will take place ahead of Chuseok (autumnal full moon harvest festival), which falls on Oct.3.
In early September, the two parties will exchange a list of families to be sought. They will search for the relevant separated family members, and then afterward finalize who will be included in the reunion.
Two facilities ― Mt. Geumgang Hotel and a reunion center near the mountain ― will be used for the gathering, the statement said. [Korea Times]
Read the rest of the Korea Times article for more details but they make this deal out to be that peace in our time is upon us with North Korea. As I have continuously stated these reunions have nothing to do with North Korea wanting to improve relations; it just another North Korean political calculation and money making venture.
