This is something that isn’t done enough, which is US servicemembers interacting with their ROK military counterparts:
Sailors of the ROK Navy’s Submarine Flotilla NINE and the USS Michigan visited Hee-rakwon, an orphanage located in Busan.
The USS Michigan made port at the Busan Naval Operations Base for the 2009 ROK-US anti-terrorism special warfare exercise. 22 sailors of the KSS – II 2 Jung-ji submarine and the USS Michigan spent valuable time at the orphanage, playing soccer, basketball, and rugby with orphans. Sailors also helped cleaning the orphanage.
It was USS Michigan’s proposal to the KSS – II 2 Jung-ji submarine that they promote friendship by visiting the orphanage. Crew members of Jung-ji submarine were more than happy to take part in such meaningful occasion.
CAPT Charles J. Doty the commander of the USS Michigan said, “It was precious experience for our crew members, helping out our Korean neighbors who are in needs. I will cherish the memory of friendship with ROK sailors and of warm welcome children of Hee-rakwon had given to us.” [USFK Site]
