Nearly 10% of Koreans are Gambling Addicts

I believe this stat considering how packed with Koreans the USFK slot machine rooms used to be:

Gambling addiction is becoming a serious social problem.  According to a 2008 study by the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute, 9.5 percent of Korean adults had experienced trouble as a result of their gambling addiction.

That translates into 3.95 million who are addicted to gambling. Among them, 7.2 percent were classified as “serious” addicts who need immediate attention and 2.3 percent or around 870,000 people were “problematic” cases needing medical treatment.

Korea’s prevalence rate compares to 2.9 percent in Canada, 2.4 percent in Australia and 4.1 percent in Singapore. It is even higher than the 6.4 percent in the U.S. state of Nevada, which includes Las Vegas.

“There is a strong tendency in our society to think of casinos and horse racing as ways to make money rather than leisure activities,” said Cho Hyun-seob, head of the Korea Prevention and Cure Center for Gambling Problem. Another problem is the proliferation of illegal gambling sites on the Internet and off-line gambling parlors. “Many people, both men and women, become habituated to gambling through the Internet,” said Park Eun-kyung, a counselor at the center.  [Chosun Ilbo]

I guess it's an easier target than smoking and drinking.

PS. Did you take out a post about Quadaffi's 15 minute speech at the UN that turned into an hour and a half of rambling nonsense because it attracted too many hits? I got a message that you had exceeded your allocated bandwidth last night.

The number of visitors visiting the site overall crashed my bandwidth and my webhost had to recover the site which caused some content to be lost.

Due to the bandwidth issue I have turned off the get recent comments plug in and went with the standard WordPress comments plug in. I am trying some other things as well to hopefully reduce bandwidth. I am already paying $50 a month for webhosting and would like to avoid having to buy an even larger webhosting package to support the increasing bandwidth requirements.

I had one a long time ago and it doesn't work. The Google Ads actually make enough to pay off site fees. To generate more revenue from them I would have to get obnoxious with where I place the ads which I don't want to do.

They need to remove all the slot machines from on post facilities. They damage a lot of individuals, especially Koreans.

Rather old thread but while searching for help, I ended up here..

My mother is so addicted to Indian casinos, I just don't know what to do..she's burning money every night and no matter what we try, she does not listen…I just can't understand why she is doing this…I mean I play once in awhile but she's out there every night…its just so stupid.
