What I Like About Korea: Always Something Going On

Some of you really long time readers may remember the list I put together about 5 years ago about What  I Like About Korea, which my selections were the subject of much discussion.  I figured now is a pretty good time to go ahead and present this list one selection at a time in order to a new generation of ROK Drop readers.  Without a doubt the thing I like the most about Korea is that there is always something going on.

Despite the complaints from many GI’s that Korea is boring, I am in fact never bored in Korea. There is always something going on in Korea  for those looking for things to do.  The culture is very interesting, the landscape is beautiful, there is great shopping, fantastic food, and when you add in the fact that you never know what the North Koreans are up to next, it makes for some interesting times.  Things to do in Korea do not immediately jump out so that is why I always tell people to buy a guidebook and learn the public transportation system.  Just these two things will go a long ways to helping anyone better enjoy their tour in South Korea, but the most important thing is to have the will to explore Korea outside of the ville areas.  I see way too many people who don’t want to exit the comfort zone they find in the ville and experience real Korea.  Yet these same people complain about how boring Korea is.  I on the otherhand doubt I will ever find Korea boring any time soon.

Attitude. That's the one thing that determines your level of interest (or boredom) in Korea. GI's have certain impositions on their time and freedom – much like the foreign English teachers here – but that doesn't stop me / us from enjoying our time here all the same. That there's far more to see in Seoul alone than I'll have time for is enough reason to not look at things as boring.

I'm too busy to be bored.

Besides, boredom is for those who lack imagination.
