By Take a look at what the director of the Defense Department’s world-wide school system is up to:
Documents, e-mails and correspondence that Croteau forwarded to the Inspector General — and which were reviewed by Stars and Stripes — allege that, among other things, Miles:
- Directed that DODEA officials hire her daughter-in-law as a teacher, bypassing veterans and other qualified candidates and violating merit principles;
- Improperly hired friends for several high-level area superintendent positions, concealing her personal connections to the candidates during the interview and selection process;
- Misused a government credit card to purchase a computer which she subsequently refused to use because she did not like its red color;
- Ordered subordinates to purchase more expensive, upgradeable airline tickets for her travel because “I believe because we travel so much that we have the right to be comfortable when we fly;” and
- Arranged staff conferences at luxury spa resorts when free government facilities were available.
Moreover, Croteau alleged, Miles frequently harassed DODEA staff members she disliked and directed that staff e-mail accounts be searched for evidence of leaks.
“I saw how she malevolently attacks good people for no good reason and harasses them to the point that they retire or quit,” Croteau said in an interview.
Croteau, who now works at the Defense Human Resource Activity, said she is not a disgruntled former DODEA employee. Instead, she said, she left her position as Miles’ assistant after Miles allegedly directed that her daughter-in-law be hired for a teaching position ahead of more qualified military veterans. If true, it is unbelievable how this woman had no shame in regards to the fraud, waste, and abuse she was part of.

I’m not convinced it’s criminal, but wasting those funds would be wrong when you consider what could have been achieved with them (then again, it would really only matter if funds destined for schools were misappropriated).

She sounds a little tough but it could be the SGM blood in her. she may need to come across a little harsh to get through to some of the DODEA teachers and administrators that have been overseas for years and are well entrenched in their position.

and your last comment shows how little you know about the make-up of DoDDS schools. Yes there are schools that have teachers that have been there for 20+ years but in Korea most teachers have been there for less than 5. That being said, teachers tend to improve in the abilities over time… why toss out the best in the organization because they are “too old” or have been their “too long”…? also discriminatory practices if you think about it..

I have seen Shirley Miles in action. As former superintendent of my school district, she managed to make MANY inappropriate decisions that nearly ruined our district and drove many good people away. Our board did not renew her contract and you were lucky enough to get her at the DODEA. Congrats. I knew this was in her future. Sorry someone else is having to deal with her. We are SO GLAD she is gone.

Wow… sounds like this post is full of DoDEA teachers. I was overseas for some time with DoD and Miles is right. Teachers are so “entitled” in DoDEA, they don’t operate in the “real” world of teachers who are clinging to their jobs for fear of cutbacks…. taking paycuts to save a counselor. DoDEA teachers just want to make sure that no one rocks their boat or makes sure that the don’t have to sacrafice for the effort of our nation at war. He spends more time communicating with his private business interests than he does trying to learn what the duties and responsibilites of his position are.
It is more than obvious that Miller is here for just as long as he can milk the system for his high salary, standard of living and travel.
Why has it taken the IG this long to act on these illegal and corrupt actions? Rumor has it that the same thing is happening with most all of Miles friends whom she appointed (hired), again ILLEGALLY, over highly qualified, experienced, proven DoDEA employees who had applied for these positions.

Reliable sources in the Department of Defense and in Congress confirm that Miles will be gone by the first of the new year. We are all hoping that your pencil eraser counter job with a huge pay raise is not where she will be going. She belongs in a Federal prison.
The evidence is overwhelming. For once, justice, not politics, shall prevail.
How long it will take to fix all the broken components of the agency, is entirely up to Mr. Thomas, the Under-Sec of Defense, who has oversight of DoDEA. However, he is being tasked by certain Members of Congress and DoD Officials to restore competent leadership to the Korea District in a prompt manner; meaning by 1 Jan as well. We assume he is a wise man and will listen to those in the know and do what has to be done.

Did u notice the DSO of Korea this summer said something like this…I have 2 years 5 months and 23 days in the U S Air Force. Me thinks he was kicked out for the GOOD of the SERVICE.
Toth is a hot headed loose cannon whom I watched make a fool of himself at a SAC training a couple of years ago yelling at a former principal in front of all the other Korea principals, parent volunteers and teachers. No one had any respect for him after that….a few months later he was gone…The Peter Principle meets Murphys Law from the DSO of Korea to the Directors chair!

I am assuming you are in Korea Guitard. If so, your kids received the best education available in a US school system, and the kids here still do, thanks in large part to the great teachers, and few great administrators that still exist. but all are having a hell of a time with the incompetent racists, at the DSO and HQ who want to turn Korea into a stateside model, ghetto school system.

I once was TDY up in Seoul and went into Itaewon for shopping and dinner. I took a wrong turn and all these guys were waving at me and I realized I was in the Sodomite part of town. I turn around and at the end of street found a restaurant to eat at. Grenier is a blatant homosexual,but the sad truth is that he is better than most all of the DSO and Admin Staff. He abviously likes young males, but there is no evidence that he has ever targeted students. Young teachers yes! Funny story about Grenier though: he comes back from the states this summer-immediately heads out to see his ‘boys’ in Itaewon. After one too many drinks, one of them gets pissed and punches him out. He gets a huge “SHINER” and proceeds to tell all that he ‘fainted’ on the airplane and fell.

I am from DDESS and i cant believe what she is doing over here, but some of these post today have shocked me. I had no idea what she has been doing overseas.
I am happy to hear, and hope it is true that she will be gone by the first of the year. Just found out that
the Asst. superintendent of FtBragg schools, Dr. Boykin, her husband was selected as an SMS position
at Ft. Bragg. Seems like she is a little to close to being his supervisor or have a little control over what happens to him to be in the position he is in. Have they no shame at all. And then the poor people from the districts that she is closing , that dont have the years or are close but not close enough to retirement, she is leaving in the cold. No seat on the bus for us. I have addressed these concerns to ourt Congressman and he has been at least forwarding this to Congress. I have been told that a full investigation is being done, not just and inquiry, but i feel to that this is going to go back to Tommy Thompson to decide what to do with her and im afraid he is just going to slap her hands. I know she will not meet with the teachers union stateside and is doing things that are totally what is in the contract.
Come on Ig. Lets get it done and get her out and all her friends before we are at the point of no return.

I think you probobly hit the nail on the head. This will go back to Thompson and a slap on the wrist will be what she gets. Congressmen/women are not in the business of upsetting the boat, unless it is to their benifit.
Since this would be seenas against the current administration, nothing will be accomplished other than ‘forwarding it on’, (with ‘of couse’ deep understanding of your interest and comments. Senator ’so and so’ thanks you for your kind and considerate interest in this matter and will forward your issue to the appropriate agency).

Sorry, the SMS positions are the new positions that
Dr. Miles created that each school would have if they had over 250 children. They have them in DODDS also. They started out calling them Resource Managers, then they changed it to something else and now they are calling them SMS positions. They are all GS11’s.

Ahh I see, well at least where I teach in Europe a school of 1000, we call this new position the Resource Manager. Our principals are actually getting into the classrooms for their “3 minute” walk thru. I guess they are using magic wands, and crystal balls to inductively know what we are doing the rest of the lesson. I find these very subjective. They take lots of notes with NO FEEDBACK. Those that do hear any feedback get…what they could do better and never hear…that was a great lesson.
Ahhh leadership, I think the walk thru should have principals get up and teach a lesson and take into consideration enrichment, GE, Special Ed, and numerous other pullouts and how they will teach and assess them too!

It’s been very interesting to watch your bloggers slowly reveal themselves so we can see the real bigots and idiots that they really are. There’s no doubt now to anyone reading this the hate filled, racist and homophobic idiots that are writing. If it wasn’t so embarrassing to claim these idiots as Americans, it would be funny.
I feel it is necessary to give a profile of these people who are blogging in case there other-than Americans reading this. These are the minority of Americans. These are probably mostly white men who don’t like the fact that Americans elected a black president, that are a bit insecure about their own masculinity and sexuality (really Mr. “DoDDSEUROPE/PAC… just “happen” to be driving in the Sodomite part of town???!!! We’ve all heard that story before, Semper Fi!)…. and some of these are teachers who are less than average, worrying about there jobs when a minority woman (or superintendent) is in control. (I can’t wait to hear them all blubber their “no, sir, I have a black friend!) These are people who are in every country, known as fundamentalist Christians (sorry for those of us who are decent Christians!), they are radical Muslims (yes, they are also homophobic and racist… hum, the similarities are uncanny), and they are the people in the world who are causing wars, exciting fears and inciting violence. They eventually eat themselves, but they kill in their path towards destruction. The blatant lies they wrote here are beyond slanderous, they are hateful and worrisome!
Follow their progressive path through this blog… anti Miles… then anti minority.. now antigay… pretty soon no one is left… scary, indeed.
For those of you who have feared as you read through… believe in a better path, most take it.. for those of you that have been “turned on” by or agree with these conversations and are mislead by the lies (oh, yes, that’s you, “Junior”)… ask for forgiveness and pray that there is no Hell. The scariest thing of all, though, is some of these people are teaching our students, black ones, white ones, gay ones and straight ones. Scary. See, in American education, we don’t care if the teacher or student is gay, straight, white, or black… we love them all and are concerned about the education of these students. You may disagree, but that is why there are religious schools, or even Muslim terrorist schools that condemn racial integration and homosexuality and promote bigotry. Please, teach there. But if you are going to teach in a DoDEA school and accept DoD paychecks (or even retirement checks, “Retired DoDDS,” I’m sure you could pick up a job at a quality Muslim school! And by the way, Retired DoDDS, don’t you know just a little too much about the “gay” lingo and the gay bars in Soeul? Hum…..), then understand that tolerance and equality is a part of the curriculum, policy, and diversity that makes DoDEA wonderful. The worst thing is that it’s that freedom that soldiers die for everyday (Semper Fi, “DoDDSEUROPE/PAC”).
And here’s the irony in it all and how negative energy begets negative energy. See, Michael Priser, president of the FEA and who happens to be gay, started the scare tactics about Miles and spewed his venom about her alleged personal interactins that had nothing to do with the education of children or the work of the union. Well, now it’s gone from gang hatred of Miles to gang hatred of gays.. and there is no one to stick up for Mr. Priser. Karma, some call it. Are you reading this and worry that you’ll be the target next?
And now for the biggest discloser. I am neither gay, nor black, nor a DoDEA teacher or counselor. I used to teach HS for DoDEA overseas and have remained close to some people at HQ. I now work at a stateside school, which is why I can’t understand the luxury that DoDEA teachers have to promote the fear mongering going on when teachers stateside are praying that they have their jobs next week. The DoDDS teachers represented by this blog, are arrogant and have no idea what’s going on in American school. My wife and I raised three boys in DoDDS (and, by the way, we didn’t have them to lure host national young boys into our beds, “DoDDSEUROPE/PAC”!) and they had EXCELLENT DoDDS teachers and EXCELLENT DoDDS schools. I KNOW that they had not one teacher represented on this blog. I’m glad. I’m even proud to say that I’m Christian, not the Christian represented on this blog, but truly try to follow in the footsteps of Christ.
And now, I’ll allow you to eat each other again and sit back and watch. Not with amusement, but with a sense of satisfaction, that I am right.

They go further to claim that anyone that opposes the homosexual lifestyle is a bigot, puritan or a mean purson who is clearly against sexual freedom as they define it.
They do not admit they are slaves to their abomination…as the Bible calls it. They instead claim they are just doing what is natural for them. Well what is natural for me is to deflower each hot babe I meet. But I have to learn to restrain myself. Our homosexual buddies cant do this. Ever here of a homo who saves himself for marriage? Hahaha. Jesus was not homophobic. He was simply and strictly Heterophilic, or a lover of the union that He created being a man and woman. All deviation from the will of God is sin, and the homphilic persons life embraces at least that one choice that is directly against God’s revealed will. This choice is self destructive and dangerous, but the heterphobic community clings to it in defiance of their creators warning that they will be thrown into the lake of fire if they do not repent of this and all other sins.
The heterophilic person is required to be civil and courteous to all people. So I gently explain the difference between the heterphile and the homophobe to any silly person that asks why we believe what we believe. A mercifull God just may renew your mind too!
You need to get your compare and contrast parameters re-calibrated. You wife and 3 boys, does not equate…(unless its the new math) to a blatant homo who feels persecuted due to the California law not allowing him to marry his San Quentin bun jamming boyfriend, so must adopt a homo boy to live with and use him for bait. Im sure if you have gone from concrete to abstract in your thinking skills you might be able to follow this concept. Who knows, you might now qualify to learn how to use a venn diagram and see the difference now.

That would be nice, indeed, Geneva. It will have to happen soon though. Miles level of incompetence is more than enough to get her out, but the illegal and immoral stunts she has pulled will not allow for her to ever be an effective Director. The IG and others have to know this, and are just waiting on what they perceive as the ‘right time’ to make the announcements or moves.
It would be interesting to know what Miles’ true affiliations are. Of course, as KERM so elequantly stated, people with no morals will sway whichever way the wind blows….eg Miles: appointed by Leslie Arsht in the Bush Republican Administration, then quickly jumping on the Obama Bus of Rock Stardom…(see her video on the DoDEA website from last year promoting her and Obama’s similarities.)

It would be nice to see the following Christmas present. Miles resigns and takes all her appointees with them. Gone goes the Middle School Principal in Osan. Gone the DSO in Korea who writes a resume for a non DoDDs setting. Gone is the what? Daughter inlaw of Miles? Forced to resign is Charlie Toth. Off to dig potatos from the hole he wandered out of.
Let the professional teachers teach like, and let the KAIZEN…go out the window.

As someone who worked under her at Tempe Union, I applaud. She pulled the same stuff on us there. She was actually fired, but was allowed to continue her contract to its finish to give her health insurance, due to wording she put in her contract as superintendent. She lied her way into the job, managed to bamboozle just about everyone for a few weeks before it became clear she had no idea what she was doing. I hope she rots in prison.

First Kermless “Target and Terminate” is Mr. Priser’s terminology not the DoDEA’s or Dr. Miles. Second how isit unethical and immoral to train management to do their job and it is the right of management to dismiss anyone who cannot do their job. Personally, I would prefer the working with someone towards improving first method. But as you know some teachers have no intention of changing their ways for what is best for students. For me I am not worried about it b/c I do my job, are you? Some teachers are to comfortable and have not been held accountable for the terrible things some (5%) have done to our students. You know who they are. Are you saying these types of teachers should remain in the classroom. Thirdly, how is this on going battle of words between Dr. Miles and Mr. Priser helping DoDEA? My understanding is it has been Mr. Priser agenda to get Dr. Miles removed from the start. He has openly stated that. How do you negotiate in good faith with someone whose agenda is to discredit you and take your livelihood. His rhetoric in his president’s reports earlier this year was down right embarrassing. I look forward to the results of the election this year and see how the membership feels about his tactics. But I would like to state a couple of things before you attack me for my opinion. DoDEA is in a transition period. We are growing in some areas and shrinking in others. People who have not had to move in 20 years are be being displaced. We have a lot of people who are at retirement age and a lot of people who are brand new to the system. This is being caused by the changing landscape of our military who I think some of us have forgotten is the reason we have jobs in the first place. Then you throw in the idea of education as a whole transforming into something that reflects the century we live in (the 21st not the 19th) we end up having a lot of disillusioned people who need to see the big picture and not just the four walls of their classroom. If it wasn’t Dr. Miles it would have been someone else. The last DoDEA director kept the status quo this one is trying to raise the bar. We all know we do a great job educating our students but you also know we have so very big specific gaps that we can improve in. Lastly, it has been three months and nothing has happen to Dr. Miles. If she did what they said she did then I agree action should be taken. I notice Mr. Priser hasn’t mention the investigation in his last two president’s reports. This makes me think that its all rhetoric or is it what you say cover up. We won;t now until it hits Starts and Lies Please remember in this country your innocent until proven guilty. So I reserve the right to withhold my judgment for now.

Also, talking to European Union reps, the investigation from the IG is continuing.
Back off the tangent. Miles, I would hope signed the same Ethics paper we all signed. She misused money for her personal pleasure. She hired her own worthless cronies who are a legend in their own mind. She violated protocol by passing qualified vets for her family. Hope to see her in the unemployment line. Oh maybe she can take that one position offered a week ago to go to Afghanistan. Ooops she couldnt do it being a woman teaching the backward muslim army officers English. They just might sell her for a couple of camels, or maybe they can only get a jackass for her.

Joe BLow, aka Kerm, Ron,– wow, what a fool you must think you are to even pen such nonsense. No, the terminology used by Miles in the training was: “How to Fire a Teacher.”
And, someone would have to be able to READ to understand the illegalities listed in Mr. Priser’s “Target and Terminate” journal, both in text and in the slides that Miles produced for her administratore. Of course, that requirement would automatically omit you.
Are you sure that you do your job when you can not even write a legible sentence? We all hope like hell you are not an English Teacher…(smile, everyone knows you are an incompetent counselor who is just kissing Mile’s ass so that you can keep your job under this insane regime.)
IG and Congress, and other Federal officials are gravely concerned with Mile’s mismanagement. The wheels turn slowly, but they turn, Ron. Given your incompetent track-record, they will eventually snag you as well; probably long after Miles is gone.

Wow – DODEA is fully funded to operate without the additional money that is brought in from contractors paying the out-of-whacked price of $22K per student… I have 2 kids in DODDS school since kindergarden and doing the math, my company has paid over $200K for their education… Who is account for the funds? There is no oversite or reporting… the DODDs schools can operate w/o the additioanl funding of the kids. Im not sayingthat we should get a “free pass” for DODDs school, but $22K is just plain and simple “OUT OF WHACK”!

The money does not go back to DoDDS it goes straight into the DoD piggy bank. Also, the schools are not there for contractors. It is a nice option for contractors but DoDDS goal is not to provide contractors dependents an education. They are there for the service members. Unless you are the owner of your company why does it matter to you that they pay out whatever. It is a great benefit you receive from your company.

That is the kind of speaking used by “educators” who are less concerned with things like writing, math and science and are more concerned with diversity, tolerance, and historical revisionism to fit ‘the century we live in’… not to mention the dark spectrum from political correctness to the Everyone’s a Winner mentality… etc… etc… etc…
If I have interpreted the intention incorrectly, my apologies… but do be aware that others may read the same nuances into these statements.

Sorry I lost you chickenhead. I have no interest in political correctness. What I am interested in is creating classrooms that meet the needs of our kids today. Kids are very bored in our classrooms today because they have to power down when they come to school. They come from homes full of television, computers, and video games. The basics are just as important as they were then, but when the school blocks the ability for a student to blog because the fear of the unknown we are not really working in the same world they are. No apology needed.
