South Implements Cap On Money Spent In North Korea

» by in: North Korea

Bad news for all the commie sympathizers in South Korea looking to make loyalty payments to the Kim regime:

South Korea said Wednesday it will keep the cap on expenses that its citizens can spend during their visits to the North either for family reunions or tourism.

Under a guideline renewed on Tuesday, South Korean citizens visiting the North to meet family members there cannot spend more than US$1,000. Payments cannot be made through credit or debit cards, either, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance said.  [Yonhap via One Free Korea]

This law is also good for the families that attend the family reunions between the North and South.  That is because a friend of mine who had a relative participate in one of these reunions in the past, was told by his relative that the long separated family member he met from North Korea spent most of the time hustling him for money.  He wa told if the family member didn’t bring back a set amount of money from the reunion he would be severely punished.  If these South Korean family members are being constantly hustled for more money this new guideline is a good way to give these family members an excuse for not giving out big pay days to their North Korean relatives that ultimately end up in the coffers on the North Korean regime.

Good move and will curtail much illegal activity as well. Wouldn't be surprised of any number of "false relatives" receiving mega sums of money.

Hustling these old folk (and the South Korean government) is exactly why North Korea wants these reunions.

…South Korean are notorious for overpaying for everything, which is why Korean tour groups are all brought shopping to souvenir shops owned by Korean-owned factories to purchase their overpriced products (strangely enough, it always seems to be Noni soap and latex pillows). You can get the exact same products, from the same factories, at Gmarket for half the price.

In a sense, these family reunions are the ultimate tourist trap.

How much will they get for killing 6 South Koreans?
