All US Military Branches Meet 2009 Recruiting Goals

» by in: Recruiting

Has anyone seen this news widely spread in the mainstream media?:

The Pentagon’s personnel chief said Tuesday the military has completed its best recruiting year since 1973, meeting all its goals and bringing in a better educated group of young people. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps met goals for active duty and reserve recruiting during the budget year ended Sept. 30 — the first time that has happened since the all-volunteer force was established, said Defense Department head of personnel Bill Carr.

He told a Pentagon press conference that it’s partly because of department spending on finding recruits, even as fewer civilian jobs were available due to the nation’s economic problems. He also cited increases in military pay.

For the active-duty force overall, Carr said 96 percent of recruits had a high school diploma, the best showing since 1996.  [Stars & Stripes]

Whenever the Army would not meet recruiting goals there was breathless reporting, but now you hardly hear anything.

Notice that the military has a 95% high school graduation rate when the national high school graduation rate is 69.2%.  I have posted before about the demagoging of the US Army high school graduation rate by the media, but isn’t it a national embarrassment that under 70% of Americans fail to graduate high school?  Also misconduct waivers were reduced by 37% even though the total number of misconduct waivers is small in the first place.

Yeah, I heard about it on the AFN (military channel I get thanks to the antenna), but not in mainstream news…

Maybe it wasn't really reported because it's not really a story – there HAVE been stories about how people looking for solid / stable / predictable jobs are up. Way up. It would make sense that the military would tighten their field, stop accepting as many questionable / marginal candidates, and improve the recruiting class as a result.

Here's hoping the new GI's get the fields they want in the new climate :)

… and better quality of recruits too. Higher aptitude tests, etc.

    Thank goodness for the recession!

People who were too afraid to join the military (and there are many who 'fear' they may be inadequate) are often bitter over the shot to their ego.

Many during the Vietnam conflict became school teachers as well as journalists and University professors. Their feelings of inadequacy have shaded their teaching as well as their reporting throughout the years in order to justify themselves to the world.

I've seen it way too many times.
