North Demands More Aid While Preventing More Family Reunions

» by GI Korea in: North Korea

As I have long told people, the family reunions had nothing to do with North Korea opening up:

The two Koreas failed Friday to reach consensus on holding more cross-border family reunions, with Pyongyang asking for “humanitarian aid” by Seoul, officials said.

In the meeting arranged by Red Cross offices from both sides, South Korea proposed holding new rounds of reunions for families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War next month and again around Lunar New Year’s Day in February.

The latest round of family reunions, held in late September, was the first in nearly two years. Ordinary Koreans cannot exchange phone calls, letters or email across the border.

The one-day working-level meeting in Kaesong, just north of the shared border, ended at around 6:30 p.m., officials at the unification ministry said.

“In conclusion, both Koreas failed to bridge differences on their stances on further reunions. No concrete agreements were reached,” an official at the ministry said. But the two sides promised to consult one another for future Red Cross talks.

“The North asked for humanitarian aid from the South. We told them that we will review it after returning (to the South),” the official said.  [Yonhap]

The North Koreans have few bargaining chips to extort aid from and these family reunions are one of the bargaining chips they use from time to time to enhance their negotiating position.  So now they are holding them off in response to South Korean government limiting the amount of money South Koreans can spend to attend these reunions as well as to extort more food aid from the South.  The important thing to remember about North Korea is that they do nothing out of the goodness of their hearts, everything is calculated to reap the maximum advantage to the ruling regime.

So they won’t accept denuclearization for aid even though international aid organizations are more than willing to help out but they demand free aid? And more over, they take reunion meetings hostage for it? Just.. wow…

    Alcyone,

The North Korean government only cares about keeping the power for itself. They ask for aid not because they care about their population but because they want to keep it fed enough so that it doesn’t revolt. They’ve been using starvation for social engineering purposes since the 50’s, if that isn’t enough evidence of this.

I would hope Kim Jong Il would fear his soul being damned for eternity based upon his continuos hineous crimes against fellow innocent human beings. However since he is an Atheist and does not believe in God or Hell, I can only hope that he is one day captured and kept alive for the longest of torment until he realizes what hell on Earth he has given his subjects for his own selfish needs.

    Nah…

What he fears the most is ending up like Ceaucescu. After all, Ceaucescu tried to emulate North Korea–and we all know how that turned out for him.
