Major General Michael Tucker to Take Command of 2ID this Week

» by in: USFK

The US 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea will have a new general take command this week:

A recent commander in Afghanistan and key figure in the response to a scandal involving soldier care problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center will assume leadership Wednesday of the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea.

Maj. Gen. Michael S. Tucker will succeed Maj. Gen. John W. Morgan III, who after two years as 2nd ID commander moves on to become chief of staff for the U.S. European Command. The 2nd ID has about 10,000 soldiers in South Korea.  [Stars & Stripes]

You can read more about General Tucker’s bio at the link, but I didn’t see anything in there about him ever serving in South Korea before.  If that is the case the general is going to have some fun learning about the unique challenges of commanding in Korea.

LOL, General Tucker is rather undistinguished himself. Hopefully he has something more on the ball that has got him as far as he has.

I have a question…is the 2ID full of a bunch of screw ups or are those just the bad apples we hear about? Are all infantry units similar to the 2ID? Is this behavior brought on by being in a forward position?

    1994,

First thing there are only a handfull or infantry soldiers in 2ID. There are more aviation and support pukes than actual combat arms. As for the screwups, it’s kind of like when you get out of jail after 10 years or solitary confinment and you have paycheck after paycheck to blow in only Vegas (TDC). Your going to get into trouble. Dispite what the Army likes to advertise they don’t really want 2ID troops traveling all over Korea unless their on a MWR or USO tour.

You might want to actually look at the statistics of who is committing most of the crime in USFK and it is not 2ID:

Good point…I was just on 1994's infantry comment. I also noticed in the last couple of Blotter reports that there have been a number of senior NCOs and officer caught at the drunk check points.

I didnt mean to sound like I was hating on the 2ID. I respect the Army. I went out partying with my GF and 5 young grunts a few times and they were well behaved (for the most part) and respectfully of our relationship. Just, they seem like a rowdy bunch.

Rowdy I can agree with, but the stereotype of 2ID being a bunch of criminals is generally not true. The rowdiness is created by the environment the soldiers live in up there in 2ID.

as a Trial Defense Attorney in Korea handling ALL of the units, I can verify that 2ID was not the majority of the problem. Soldiers are Soldiers, people are people. I at least 3 clients from a single non-2ID maintenance company. 2ID was not particularly bad at all. Crime was spread across the pen.

I like this guy more and more. Makes me almost want to go back to Korea.
