Massive security at Asian summit in Thailand

» by in: Southeast Asia

Does anyone think this is overkill?

Thailand has deployed more than 36,000 military and police to guard a summit of Asian leaders, working to prevent any repeat of the disruptions that shut down another meeting earlier this year, an official said Thursday.

The government is still smarting from the storming of the East Asian Summit in April in the seaside city of Pattaya, where anti-government protesters charged through thin police ranks and forced the evacuation of several leaders by helicopter and boat.

A main protest organizer said no new demonstrations are planned this week.

How about any unplanned protests? 36,000 military and police.  That is slightly bigger than the airborne invasion of The Netherlands staged by Field Marshall Montgomery in World War II.  Do these protesters come equipped with machine guns and Tiger Tanks?

In all fairness some Thai demonstrations can bring in people by the thousands.

Leaders of 16 Asian and Pacific nations, including Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, will gather Friday for an annual conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Cha-am, a beach resort 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Bangkok.

I’ve heard the beach resort island of Ko Samui is the best in Thailand. Why wasn’t the summit held there? Maybe because of how small the island is. That or officials worried a local wedding featuring a Thai bride riding in on an elephant that was preceded by a show put on by some drag queens* may have been too colorful.

*- Sometime in 2007 or 2008 I read about just such a wedding. I then incorporated it into one of my webfiction stories.

The airborne invasion of the Netherlands failed, unfortunately. The Netherlands was liberated by the First Canadian Army (an international force under the command of Canadian generals), with the support of American and British bombers. They had to fight their way to Antwerp from Normandy (liberating Belgium along the way). (Check the great picture at the top of the page).
