Wonder Girls Crack the Billboard Top 100

I still doubt the Wonder Girls will ever make it big in the US, but this is undoubtedly an accomplishment to be proud of:

The Wonder Girls, one of South Korea’s top girl groups, has been active in the United States and recently became the first Korean singers to enter the top 100 of the main Billboard chart.

“Nobody,” which was unveiled in the United States in June, ranked 76th on the October Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Park Jin-young.

The Billboard Hot 100 is one of the two most important charts in the U.S., the world’s largest music market, listing the top 100 songs regardless of genre, and is frequently used as the standard measure for ranking songs in the U.S.

The Wonder Girls, the five-member band, made its debut in the States in the summer, releasing an album in English and joining the Jonas Brothers on a concert tour.  [Korea Times]

If it wasn't for korean-Americans, they probably wouldn't even have made it that far. Sorry, but something tells me that their fans aren't "white", Hispanic or "black" people.

Remember how many non-koreans were at all those Rain concerts? Except for a few token non-koreans that is.

I dont know about about that. They toured with the Jonas Brothers earlier this year. Even so, I'm sure Korean-Americans make up the majority of their US fans.

I find it hilarious the reaction of some Koreans and Korean-Americans to this song "Nobody". A number of them are whining because they put English lyrics to the song. Why should they do such a thing given Spanish pop music does well in the States! It just doesnt seem to register with them Spanish artists can do this since there are over 35 million Spanish speakers and its not uncommon to find English speakers who understand Spanish. Compare that to Korean where you have less than two million Korean speakers and very, very few natives who have any proficiency in Korean. Oh no, its gotta be racism…

But it seems the Wonder Girls and their managers get it. I saw parts of an interview they did here. They speak very passable English. Theyve obviously worked hard and deserve the success they have achieved!

I have to say that the Wonder Girls have definitely been more successful then Rain in regards to breaking into the US market. Will there become household names anytime soon? I don't think so, but they do appear to be working hard to make a name for themselves.

Something just came to mind. I have no experience with music, so I may be off base here. But it seems to me the Wonder Girls are marketing themselves to the American female audience. This may be a mistake.

Imagine some teenybopper leaving a Jonas Brothers concert. She starts thinking about the opening act:

"Yeah, those Wonder Girls are pretty good. But theyre so cute! If I buy their CDs, my boyfriend may see it and like them too. Then he'll leave me for one of those geeky Asian girls like Jeannie Yi or Betty Nguyen! Then where will I be???"

It seems to me they may be better off going for the American male audience instead!

Gerry beat me to it… The Stepford Wives called – they want their hair / facial expressions back…

Or… Will Smith – for the sequel to 'I, Robot' he wants these to stand in for what's-her-name.
