So it is very important to have one day, to take a few mintues of our time to be grateful for the work they’ve done for us.”

I have often heard words like this all my life. Yet didn’t understand its meaning as well as I should have. I think others think like me.
After we lost in Vietnam, invaded Iraq , and are now stuck with a mess in Afganistan, I wonder what does that have to do with keeping America free? Why we went to Vietnam is debatable, yet it had nothing to do with freedom in the US. The invasion of Iraq was never justified, even though it has turned out well for the large majority of Iraqis and changed the balance of power in the mid east. We were moraly right in invading Afganistan to kill those who attacked us on 9/11 including destroying the government that supported them. Yet after 9 years we are still there building a nation that never was and probobly never will be.
We should honor those who have done Americas dirty work and given their blood and lives in fighting its wars. They truely deserve to be saluted every veterans day, remembered every memorial day, and given the respect they deserve for doing so. They have done the bidding of our countries leaders.
The problem I have is with this countries leaders. Over my liftime some have done well, some mediocre, and some poorly. When things are going well they salute the military, when the going gets tough they stab the military in the back while they run from decisions they have made. They are almost always more than willing to cut military spending, yet first to ask the pentagon why they don’t have what they need.
So, it becomes for me, more of keeping the country together in spite of its leadership. To fight wars that are poorly considered, and their ability to go to the fight and win without the leaderships support. To continue to serve and honor the country they came from, dispite a people who could often care less or actively work against them. Yes, they fight to keep America free. They have given the American people and its leadership the ability to act like asses and get away with it. And by doing so have been able to give us a way of life that is unmatched in the world.
