What's with the Union Jack?
12:03 pm on November 24th, 2009 2
I spent a few hours in Hunchun while traveling around Yanbian. The town is considered a gateway for Chinese heading to Vladivostok and for Russians coming into China, but the town's only evidence of its inland port status are the handful of downtown shops peddling Russian goods. Otherwise, it's an unremarkable, sleepy town that looks like any other in China. The road between Hunchun and Tumen hugs the Tumen River in places, so you do get views into North Korea, but there is not much to see other than a few villages and deforested hills.

#2 Which side of the river are the deforested villages…Seriously…I've not been there.

The characters on the bottom left say "cun shou ji, bao" which means "store your cell phones and suitcases here" before you head over to the DPRK.
The Union Jack is just pure randomness on the part of the poster designer. Russian flag, British flag — it's all foreign and exotic, so why not go with it?
And come to think of it, maybe those little Russian dolls are a nice metaphor for North Korea itself — riddles wrapped in mysteries and enigmas, etc. As soon as you think you've got it figured out, a new layer presents itself.
