Poorly equipped for winter warfare and in a rush to reach the Yalu it became a rapid advance that ignored all intelligence reports that interfered with his quest. As a result when the Chinese came out of hiding and entered the war MacArthur and the troops he commanded were outnumbered, unprepared, uninformed and spread apart and suffered needless casualities. Yes, it was a very tough November and December. You can thank MacArthur and his foolish forey and rush to the Yalu for that.
