First Foreign Labor Union Started In Korea

It will be interesting if this union will do any good in regards to stopping the shady practices of hagwon owners in Korea:

A group of foreign nationals working in Korea has formed a labor union, the law firm representing them said Tuesday, in a first for the country, according to Yonhap news.Five foreign lecturers working at an educational institute in Incheon, west of Seoul, received approval from local authorities on Nov. 24 to launch the union, according to the firm. Its members later increased to nine.

The union was initiated by Aevan Lloyd, an English lecturer from Australia, who filed a complaint with a local labor center over unpaid wages for overtime work in July. The case was later settled, but Llyod said he feared retaliatory action from his employer.

“We decided that if this happens again, the best way to do it is to take collective action, and the only way was to establish a labor union,” Llyod said in a phone interview.  [Korea Herald via reader tip]

Didn’t some teachers at Berlitz form a union about 5 years ago?

When employees want to unionize, they’re doing it as a last resort. Their employer better wake up and fix the problems.

A few years ago when USFK was treating DACs and contractors like soldiers, there was talk about contractor unionization. I’m glad it never came to that, but…

“WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ONLY DIRTY WITH THEIR MOUTH BUT PROMISCUOUS IN ALL THEIR WAYS. SEXUALLY PREOCCUPIED PEOPLE (S.O.P.) THAT IS HOW WE CALL CHRISTLESS AMERICANS WHO ARE SO RUDE AND MEAN!”

Mmm, that’s a very un-Christlike comment. I guess someone skipped the parts in the Bible that preach tolerance.

“Give, and it shall be given to you. For whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return.”

So how long before a shit-stirring English speaker a member of AES sends them a death threat so they can get on Canadian radio?

It’s not just any Canadian radio station, it’s CBC Radio, home of Lorne Greene and other great Canadians, mister!

PS. Fox News is American, isn’t it? ;-)
