Update On Uijongbu’s LRT Construction

Here is something that should really help reduce the traffic in Uijongbu once it is completed:

When I came to Uijeongbu in August 2007 a series of cement pillars were being erected around town — the start of what will eventually become a Véhicule Automatique Léger (VAL; automatic light vehicle) system. This type of light rail system is fully automated (unmanned) and unique for using rubber-tired people mover technology, along with synchronized sliding doors between the cars and platform to prevent passengers from falling onto the rollways (tracks). Construction of the Uijeongbu LRT (의정부경전철) began in July 2007 and should finish in 2011 if everything goes according to plan — different sources list April, August, and September as the date when the line will be open to the public.  [An Acorn in the Dog's Food]

You can read more about the LRT at the link, but the new LRT is going to be used to primarily connect the east and western portions of Uijongbu while the subway already connects the north and southern portions.  The LRT should get a lot of use because traffic in Uijongbu is quite bad.  I can remember during rush hour traffic it taking an hour to drive from Camp Stanley to Camp Red Cloud, which is just ridiculous for about a 10-12 kilometer drive.

This is going to increase property values between Camps Essayons and Stanley quite a bit.

I don't think that Essayons is around anymore.

It's there but it's closed and overgrown with weeds and shit.

I think Koreans are too married to their vehicles for this to really reduce traffic (along with traffic lights that only allow one direction to move at a time). I think this will be fantastic for the middle and high school students trying to get around rather than clogging the buses beyond capacity. What will help more is that I heard they are going to expand the main freeway between Seoul and Uijeongbu from 4 lanes to six lanes.

14 Minutes from Stanley to Red Cloud today. Lots of new roads with not much traffic on them out in that area.

A bit off topic, but… I haven't been in 2ID since 1999, although I was on Yongsan from 2004-2007. It looks like I'm going to CRC or Hovey in March. I already know I can jump on the Seoul subway in out the main gate of Casey. What about CRC? From what I can see on Google Earth, it looks like you can now walk down the street (or take a cab) to Nokyang station and eventually transfer to the brown line, getting off at Noksapyong right next to Yongsan. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

Correct, Nogyang with a transfer at Seokgye is the best route to Noksapyeong from CRC.
