You do know those girls are gravure idols, not actually in the JSDF? Well, at least i had a look and Kana Tsugihara was in there. Look her up on google. Good stuff
LOL, OK. What type of gun is in the background? (yes, if you look long enough and close enough there is a gun system). It looks like a naked Phalanx (no pun intended), but I don't think it is. Anyone care to comment?
In the US Navy, it's called the CIWS (Close In Weapons System) used aboard ships to shoot incoming cruise missiles out of the air before they can hit a ship. We had them in Iraq, positioned around the super FOBs to shoot down incoming mortar and artillery rounds. They have an integrated radar system working in tandem with them and they work like a champ!
Are you sure its the US CIWS (Phalanx) or is it the Danish 'Goalkeeper'. Both are very similar and I don't know if the Japanese bought the US model or the Danish one.
17 years ago in the early days of the Clinton Administration as Clinton was considering changing the policy on homosexuals in the military, I was escorting a Japanese Major General around the Pentagon for meetings. He was head of Operations for the JGSDF and as we passed through the women's military history corridor, I joked with the Japanese attache who was with us that someday soon the JGSDF headquarters will have a similar corridor since they were starting to enlist women.. The Major General, without missing a beat said "and next time I come back maybe you can escort me to the homosexual military corridor.
An hour later we were in with the DCSOPS and the discussion turned to Okinawa and about some of the conflicts the Army has with our Marine counterparts. The General replied, "General MacArthur truly loved the Japanese, so we have no Marine Corps."

OMG… shes sitting on a very "phallic" weapons system. My buddy served on a Kidd class destroyer and called the CIWS the "R2-D2" with a penis.
