Korean Government Announces New Citizenship Guidelines

I posted before about the new regulations from the Korean government in regards to spouses receiving dual citizenship and now even more guidelines to offer Korean citizenship to ethnic Koreans and foreigners has been released:

Permanent residency from next month will immediately go to ethnic Koreans with foreign passports who either own real estate in Korea worth 400 million to 500 million won (341,734 to 427,168 U.S. dollars) or deposit at least 500,000 U.S. dollars in a domestic financial institution.The same status will be granted to ethnic Koreans who either work for Korean companies for more than two years and earn more than 38,000 dollars per year, or work for domestic manufacturers for four years.

Non-Korean foreigners who stay in the country for more than five years and earn more than 40,000 dollars per year can also receive permanent residency.

The Justice Ministry Tuesday said it will ease qualifications for permanent residency for ethnic Koreans from abroad and foreigners. Amid the country’s low birth rate and rapidly aging population, the move is intended to encourage such Koreans and foreigners to work for Korean companies and invest in Korea.  [Donga Ilbo via reader tip]

For some of non-Korean citizens living long term in the ROK this may be an option for you. I wonder if this option is open to USFK contractors making over $40,000 a year or not?

    I assume that people covered by the SOFA are not eligible, since they pay no taxes to the RoK.

    The option is there but no one will take that option. Zero people will want it. As you know, Korea is the most vile place in the world. A hellish most racist ugly place in the world to live where the most vilest of creatures called the Koreans breath and live. Nobody wants to be in Korea other a few Korea apologists. Ugliest country in the world, ugliest people in the world. Why would anyone want that “option”, you have to be joking? You can read all about here.

    Hey Tom. Do you just like to troll? When someone agrees with you and defends your (wide) stance, you blow it off.

    Anyhoo. I suspect contractors wouldn't do it because that gives them intent to stay in Korea. CCK would be f@rking people.

    Another fact: Scott Bonner is still in Korea. Don't know why or how but he's here. Seems to be hanging in the Pyontaek area. I wonder what his intent is. He's quite the mind reader.

    Scott Bonner should be saran wrapped to a piece of ply wood abd beaten with socks full of rocks. What a turd licker.

    Residency != Citizenship…

    I've already got permanent residency, so there's really no advantage for me to go ahead with it. Heck, I can think of three great disadvantages to getting Korean citizenship:

    1) Losing the right to claim a lump sum refund on my pension contributions.

    2) As much as I think foreigners get the short end of the stick when dealing with Korean law, I think it is worse for Koreans.

    3) Being held accountable to Korean laws while I'm abroad.
