I met Lew Millett when I was in the 82nd ABN DIV back in 1978. SP4 John Millett was in my squad in C Co, 2-504 Inf (ABN). John told me one time and one time only that his dad was a CMOH winner, but I did not believe him at first. I went to the division library and sure enough there was a book of CMH winners that had a guy named Millett in it who won the medal in Korea. One day John said his Dad was in town and would be coming by to see the barracks that evening. I hung around to see what he looked like. He came to our barracks by himself. To me he looked like an old guy, but I remember he turned to me and growled something like "these barracks look like shite!" or "these barracks look like a whorehouse!" I knew by his tone that he was the real deal. He checked out John's room and they left. I remember John telling me that he had lived in Viet Nam for like 4 or 5 years at Cam Ranh Bay. The way I learned of John's death was while reading Time Magazine article about the Gander incident there was a picture of his dad in uniform. He had over seas bars from his wrist to his elbow. Anyway, the're both in Valhalla now and I hope to see John when I get to the other side.

The VFW Post at Osan AB, Post 10216 Hill 180 Memorial, is named after this famous battle and had the honor of hosting Col. Millett several times over the years. If in town, visit the post and there is a wall in honor of Col Millett.

He took his kids on patrols in Vietnam? What a nut! I mean that in the most respectful way though. COL Millett showed us how its done. May we all have the bravery and foresight to be like him if the need ever arises. And lets hope it doesnt!

Great article. I wish most Americans would read this stuff and realize the kind of courage that should exist in a society.

I am really in awe of the 'wait here, I'll be right back' behind enemy lines. True courage.
