For fans of Tully’s Coffee living in South Korea here is some good news for you:
Tully’s Coffee Founder and Chairman Tom O’Keefe made a whirlwind trip in November to Tokyo, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Shanghai and Seoul, largely to meet with potential business partners about becoming Tully’s licensees, like DK Retail recently did in South Korea. Its first store is scheduled to open there in March. [Seattle Times]
I never tried Tully’s Coffee until I got stationed at Ft. Lewis just south of Seattle and Tully’s had one of those small drive up coffee shops along the road on my way to work. The coffee is better than Starbucks, but a bit overpriced in my opinion.

I've been here long enough to remember that the only thing you could get at legitimate coffee shops was instant and "hazelnut" (traditional Korean recipe: ( 1) put half as much grind as normal of hazelnut falvoured coffee in the filter, 2) brew a pot, 3) don't change the filter, 4) charge 4000 won a cup (when the won was 700 won to the dollar) and 5) repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 until someone complains then start all over again)).
I'm still not a big fan of coffee shops. Their beans are more often than not burnt and/or stale.
That's why I have a coffee roaster and an espresso machine at home.

Can you recommend a good roaster? NOTHING on earth like the last sip of the first cuppa in the AM!

Ho Yong-man coffee house in Apkujongdong, close to the Apkujongdong subway stop is very good. He does his own roast and it is as expensive as SBs but fresh. There are now other roasters in Seoul that are doing good work too.
