Korean Fishermen Catches Minke Whale Off of Yeosu’s Coat

» by in: Environment

So when is Sea Shepherd going to film Whale War Korea?:

A local fisherman in Yeosu reportedly made over 14,000,000 won with his catch of a minke whale on the weekend.  Fisherman Choi along with the coastguard followed the whale for about five miles before catching it. The whale, measuring 4.3 x 2.8m and weighing over a ton, was caught legally with the use of a net and has already been sold to the 수산물상회 buffet.

Delighted, Choi commented that he didn’t set out intending to find a whale but he is happy to have been so fortunate.
According to the Jeollanam-do coast guard, two minke whales are captured off the east coast of Yeosu each year. [Korea Beat]

It may be little known, but Korea is actual one of the most prolific whaling nations in the world.  The east coast city of Ulsan is famous for its plethora of whale restaurants as well.

"was caught legally with the use of a net"

Somehow I was under the impression that only "accidentally" caught whales could be caught in Korea. Stalking it for 5 miles with a coast guard escort only sounds like an accident if you understand the Special Circumstances.

I hear the Lost Nomad threw down his fishing pole and bass lure and was last seen running off for the South Sea.

"According to the Jeollanam-do coast guard, two minke whales are captured off the east coast of Yeosu each year."

I wonder what that means. Does it mean that two are approved to be caught legally… or fishermen try their hardest to but only manage to bring in two each year.

11 people a day paying 7,000 won to go on a whale watching cruise would make the same money as selling 2 dead whales.

Just an idea to a Korean tourism industry that wants to push the Walker Hill Casino, Korean Hawaii and shopping in Itaewon.

2,000 pounds of whale meat 14,000,000 won?????? W7,000 a pound, thats not bad. I'm sure on some restaurant's menu there is fish eye soup and I bet the customer will crap in their pants. Also I'm sure the whale penis will sell for a lot too as will the anus, colon, and sphincter. Mmmmmm good eating.

Just think if they chopped that think up in front of you like San Nachi, man the restaurant would go bizerk!

I'm all for whale hunting if people who order it at the restaurant must first eat a large cube of raw whale blubber.
