As the Chinese govt has so much control / influence in the economy, I sometimes I wonder how much trust you can put in their figures.
Every party chief, from the lowest to the highest wants to convey good information to the next level, and if they “massage” the figures just a bit, by the time it hits Beijing, it will be just Magnificent performance, but not really a “true” indication of what is going on.
It’s like Korea selling cars in America – good sales figures, but they are giving them away compared to the domestic market. They have a great warranty – could that be that the average consumer doesn’t think they will really last that long ? I sure hope the export version is much better than the domestic version, otherwise their warranty costs down the road, will cost a fortune.

The ten year warranty for Hyundai customers in America started in year 2001. Do you think we would have heard about the massive warranty jobs that you’re referring to, by now?

I’m unsure about Hyundai but I know with Kia if the car is sold to another individual the 10 year warranty does not stay in effect. Both are good cars but I think the 10 year warranty will only be seen by a very few who actually keeps a car ten years.

Interesting stats. Now can you do a similar one, comparing China and the US after the American bubble economy built on phony real estate assets popped?

Face it, you guys are broke and you guys are poor because you spent all your dollars on toys and guns. The Chinese on the surface, seem they are poor. But they are much smarter than you guys. The Chinese save, patiently bide their time, waiting for the day when they will buy up America. The reversal of fortune will be virtually overnight.

No matter how strong China becomes or how weak the U.S. get’s, the U.S. will never be invaded just like Russia and China won’t be invaded no matter how bad or good things are. These three countries will have their up’s and downs in history but fact is they are all three too big to ever change hands. The U.S. no doubt will be surpassed by China as the economic powerhouse due to their population. It always makes me laugh to see your posts bashing the U.S. Tom considering Korea’s history and the fact that the U.S. will never let itself be taken over by another country the way yours has been many times in the past. Honestly I think you are a pretty pathetic guy to wish colapse of the nation that has given Korea so much. You seem like a typical Korean American…trying to take from both sides…

Korea is a small country landlocked with 3 of the world’s 4 big powers. So obviously that can be a problem when the 3 biggest powers in the world are hostile. Our land was invaded many times, but one thing is certain. We didn’t lose our language and we didn’t lose our identity, no matter if we got conquered or not. Look at all the Asiatic peoples who just got absorbed by the Chinese. That didn’t happen to us. America is a big country, sided by big oceans, and you got rich by robbing other nations and other peoples. But now you guys are living off of the reputation that your grandfathers built. Apples and oranges my friend.

Seems to me that Korea’s identity is influenced by the U.S. considering the U.S. has troops in the country and Koreans work so hard to be like westerner’s. There are BK’s, McDonalds, Cold Stone, Levi’s, etc… everywhere you look in Korea and probably half of the younger generation get their eyes fixed to look more like westerner’s so to say you haven’t lost your identity is dumb especially coming from a Korean who calls himself Tom. Even you have lost some of your identity in your name.

Don’t be silly, why would Koreans want to look like fat ugly bald westerners? American fast foods are just more junk food, nothing to do with “losing identity”. It seems to me, Americans whine the loudest because Koreans are not western enough. At least we’re not $54 trillions in debt and still pretending and trying to act like a rich country.

Oh, so we should look more like bald short fugly Koreans? Come on Tom… When an American comes to Korea he dates Korean Women…When a Korean goes to America no American Woman is going to date him, at least not as the norm. Don’t try to compare looks, the Women tell the story in that department. The Women in Korea are gorgeous but the men in Korea are just plain fugly with a capital F. As far as changing your name…I would say that has a lot to do with your identity.

    January 11th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

You clearly don’t know much about history and linguistics.

Korea wasn’t invaded any more times than other countries. Heck, if we were to count the number of Viking raids alone, some countries would have probably been invaded thousands of times.

You also wouldn’t be able to understand Korean as it was spoken a long time ago.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buyeo_languages

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Korean

All languages evolve over time to the point that their older dialects cannot be understood by their modern speakers without a translation (and I won’t even bother to get into the fact that a great deal of Korean words are loan words).

So, you’ve kept your language and you’ve been invaded 500 times? Whatever. If the thought makes you feel good…

I have to agree with you that the USA IS LIVING OFF THE REP BUILT by our grandfathers. Most of them held the belief that if you wanted something you should work for it – now folks live by the belief that if you want something the government should give it to you.

I am not fat or bald and I bet my wife is better looking than any woman you have been able to get. I met my Korean wife on a movie set where I was an extra and she was an extra. She is knock out gorgeous and will tell you that even though she is a Korean, she would never date a korean man because they are just, well, not very good looking in the human gene pool nor are they mature, she say’s they are all mama’s boy’s who live at home until they are 30 and always feel like they are entitled to be self centered little A-holes when in reality they should be thankful that any Woman would date their ugly ass. So in my view, it isn’t that Korean men are ugly, which they probably are from a Woman’s POV, it is that they are ugly and mama’s boy’s which I guess Women find unatractive.

Being located on a peninsula, surrounded on 3 sides by water, probably helped. Vietnam was ruled for 1,000 years by the Chinese and 100 years by the French, yet the Vietnamese managed to retain their culture and language and achieve independence. Mountainous Nepal and Bhutan survive, sandwiched between two giants.

when it comes to your language,I must say that 70% of Korean are Chinese characters, your language is created on the base of Chinese, this is the fact, maybe your history book never tell you about this
please check your nation flag now,do you know the origin? let me tell you a story, in 1882,Korea ambassador visited Japan, before the trip, the ambassador wished taking the Chinese dragon flag on body, but The Chinese government refused, because a subject state didn’t have the qualification to take the dragon flag, at last The Chinese government give the ambassador a Chinese TAIJI flag

about culture, South Korea is better than China mainland, because the real Chinese culture can only be found in South Korea and Taiwan, in mainland China, the CCP had destroyed the Chinese culture during culture revolution in 1970s, nowadays, most of the Chinese have no belief, they only believe money, you know it’s very bad!! so some Chinese scholars hope that South Korea and Taiwan can still make the Chinese culture more brighter

You gotta find out where those numbers came from first. The average Chinese person makes squat and their government does everything it can to keep them ignorant. To the extend of controlling the internet inside China. Also the Chinese government sets the currency exchange and controls every metric / portion of their economy. Because of this you can’t take any numbers at face value.

I have no “wishful thinkings” of Korea’s collapse.

I don’t hate “your people”… be they racial or national.

So, don’t hate me because I’m white (not to mention, beautiful).

“Whites” aren’t making these postings that irritate you. Certain people are making these postings. Hate them.

Hate them because their values are against your values and the completion of their goals mean the failure of yours. That’s reasonable.

Hating them because they are white is a sign of a weak or lazy intellect… one that can’t define the exact reasons for its own failures and must resort to easily-grasped categories like skin color to rationalize hatred and blame.

With a bit more contemplation, you may find there are some white Americans who wish for the success of Korea and there may be some of Korean origin who wish it to fail.

Well, South Korea is overpopulated. It’s to a point that Korea still has high emigration up to this present time. When a country has high emigration, it means their country is not good. Koreans need to work on controlling their population. Sex Education, family planning and proper use of contraceptives is a must for Koreans. Korea is known for throwing away their babies to foreign countries. Koreans must be more civilized and make their country cleaner. Too Many Koreans litter. Also, Koreans need to develop their food culture. Koreans need to make their food popular all over the world. It will really help their image and make their economy better. Korea’s food industry is still behind. Koreans also need to be proud of Korean cars. Too many Koreans emigrate and love to buy Japanese cars. Koreans need to be proud of Kia and Hyundai.

That’s an odd statment considering KOREA HAS THE LOWEST BIRTHRATE IN THE WORLD. (google for it – there are dozens and dozens of reputable citations available)

It’s to a point that Korea still has high emigration up to this present time. When a country has high emigration, it means their country is not good.

Guess what professor – there is also a very high rate of reverse immigration – where Koreans are returning to live in Korea. This is especially true of older Koreans.

    Typo,

Not a value judgment or anything, just a descriptive statement – but your wife out-married and “defected” so to speak through her mate choice. So all things being equal, she would be expected to have more unfavorable views about the males of her ethny, certainly relative to Korean females who pursue endogamous relationships.

You should study evolutionary biology and psychology. You would have a better understanding of human biodiversity and sociobiological issues involved in this topic. The different racial and ethnic groups faced different selection pressures in the past that resulted in evolved differences. Much of the Korean genome evolved in Arctic climes (think Altaic, Tungusic, Siberian peoples) whose environmental pressures tended to favor more “beta” type males, male provisioning, more monogamous and long-term pair bonding, etc., over more “alpha” types, physical and social dominance, etc. that tend to be favored in relatively more “benign” environments such as sub-Saharan Africa where the atavistic reproductive preferences of females can take precedence. Note that sufficient technological sophistication can turn the harsher climes and environments into “benign” ones, enough so that female reproductive preferences can rise to the fore, and we have indeed seen this and do see this today.

Different population groups, and the interactions between different population groups, are going to reflect these different evolutionary histories. White males will tend to be the “aggressors” (used not pejoratively, but biologically speaking) with respect to Korean (and E. Asian in general) women, while Korean males will generally not be the “aggressors” vis a vis White females. And if you compare between, say, Northern Europeans and Southern Europeans, or between Whites and Blacks, you’ll generally find Southern Euro males as “aggressors” against Northern Euro females, and Black men as “aggressors” against White females.

It’s in “defense” against these patterns of “aggression” that things like taboos and entire cultural/legal regimes were and are constructed, such as Jim Crow and lynching Black men, whose potential physical/sexual/social dominance and “aggression” was feared by Southern White men, for whistling at or paying any attention towards White women.

So Korean and other East Asian males aren’t the only ones that face this kind of “aggression,” though they are generally understood to be a prototypical example of such a group. In a certain sense they face less “aggression” than White men, and more specifically NW Euro White men, due to the politico-cultural regime in the West that promotes and propagandizes this sort of “aggression” against White females such as through cultural programming that depicts Black or “darker” men with White females.

As for Korean men, it would seem that at this point the “aggression” is more or less tolerable and manageable. Though in the future of course, if it passed a certain threshold and or was coupled with a firmly antagonistic politico-cultural media machine, they would be completely justified in fighting back, with any and all means at their disposal, in order to defend their “animal territory” and reproductive access to females.

Please! You think only Korean Women feel this way about Korean men? I travel to a lot of Asian cities in my line of work and the Women all feel the same way about Korean men. I have asked myself before what Women could see in Korean men, not their physical appearance, but just in the way they act. Korean men act like they are 20 years behind their age and what really amazes me is that applies to almost all the population. Korean parents are missing something when it comes to the upbringing of their boy’s.

    1. Korean guys are not attracted to fat loud women with tendancies of a male (mirror image of white guys).

    3. Figment of white man`s imaginations. White guys are desperate for Korean women, they would change their lives just to meet them. When you have a zillion white guys going after a handful of Korean women, the odds are that there will be some success. Blame it on the Confucian social system. Under this system the oldest male in a family unit (usually the husband) sets the rules and everyone within the family unit must obey his unquestionable authority. Under this system a “good women” will not question her husband and will do everything in her power to support him and have unshakable devotion and loyalty. She will be faithful to him and raise his children.

The husbands chief duties are to “the” family, but this is not referencing his own personal family unit but rather the family unit of his parents. He must honor and do all sorts of stuff for his parents and the family in general, especially if he’s the oldest son of his father. His wife must also follow suit and take care of the husbands parents, never mind her own. She must do this without complaint regardless of how badly the son’s mother treats her, because she’s not good enough for the the older mothers “perfect” son.

Notice in all this that there is nothing saying the husband can’t / shouldn’t go screw around with other women? There is nothing mentioning how he must respect or value his wife’s opinion. Its a one way street, the wife obeys the husband, end of story. If she doesn’t then he gets to smack her around until she does. Any doubter need only look at Korean’s (and China’s) domestic violence laws (or lack thereof). You see a man smacking around his wife, you get the police, they’ll take one look and tell you to go mind your own business because its a “family situation”.

What modern educated women wants to put herself into that situation? Its practically servitude of the rest of your life. Your enslaved not only to your husbands wish’s and desires, but also to his mothers and fathers. You will have to wash and feed his aging mother, even as she curse’s you and tells you how bad you are. Chinese marriages are the same way, its all bad for the women.

Now steps in the westerner, having already gone through the women’s liberation several generations ago, we’re MUCH more understanding and respectful about marriage. A western marriage is more about being a 50/50 partnership then a dictatorship. Just think on that for a little while.

Main reason why Korean man don’t marry western woman is: Western women age faster than Korean women so they get fat and unattractive after marriage. It is frustrating for Korean man to notice that his western woman look older than him and the beauty that captivated him no longer exist after 3 or 4 years later (isn’t the same reason why westerners are attracted to Asian women?)
A second reason why Korean man don’t want a western women is that western women don’t fit the Korean (Asian) servitude role for women and is this same very reason why some Korean women prefer western men because they no longer want this role. These Korean women usually have strong personality or a very strong sense of individuality and they use to play the “chief of the family” role when married to a western man.
Most Korean women don’t want western man so what most western guys get in Korea are those who don’t fit Korean tradition, which is just a minority, so I don’t see the “aggressor” thing mentioned by Westinghouse here.
In Brazil Koreans are still between their first and second generation so almost 99% of Koreans still marry Koreans but the Chinese and Japanese in their third and fourth generation marry blond European descendant Brazilians (like Gisele Bundchen) a lot, so does it mean that Brazil will become a “asianized” country in the future???

Everyone knows this was you Tom no one got owned it is the same thing korean men always say if a korean woman marries a foreigner. A lot of korean women married to korean men cheat on their husbands with foreigners, I know several myself. You better keep you woman away from foreigners Tom or she will get a real man someday but the way you complain like a biaaatch might indicate you are gay so maybe you don’t have to worry about that huh?

Look at the stats, most Korean women who marry foreigners marry Japanese and Chinese (mostly ethnic Koreans from China) men, then the white guys.

I’ve searched for these stats…but can’t find them. I’m sure you have a citation from a reputable website, right?

    Guitard, here`s your source.

    http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/NEWKHSITE/data/html_dir/2009/11/28/200911280029.asp

Only 8000 Korean women married foreign men in 2008, compared to three times as much Korean men who married foreign women. Out of 8000 Korean women who married foreigners, only 8% were married to Americans. By far, the top marriage partners were Chinese (I`m sure most were ethnic Koreans) and Japanese. So I`m afraid you guys are not doing well as you think you are. Not even close.

The statistics to which you make reference are for SECOND marriages.

Nice try 탐 ~ but you fail again.

If ever in the history of the Korean blogosphere an entire comments thread deserved to be deleted (not counting Marmot’s Hole), this one takes the cake.

    Dr. Yu…

    Lots to comment on here.

“Main reason why Korean man don’t marry western woman is: Western women age faster than Korean women so they get fat and unattractive after marriage.”

Hmmm… I used to think that way about Korean (Asian) women. They mostly looked rugged after 30. Now-a-days, I see a lot of attractive Korean women pushing 40 and, sometimes, beyond. I don’t know if I just got older, there are more missy ajumas taking care of themselves or familiarity simply breeds appreciation. It might be a bit of all.

I still think Filipinas and other SE Asians mostly look rough after 30… maybe I just have to live there for a few years to see otherwise.

I see Russian (former bargirl) wives now and then and… dammn, Dr. Yu… in the daytime, you are absolutely right. These girls look lumpy and well-worn… flopping around in the ultra-casual fashion that screams, “I used to be a whoore but look how dressed-down I am in hopes you will think I was never a whoore.”

I hate that fake under-dressing… it actually looks more whoore-like in an off-duty way.

I’m sure that is not how they represented themselves prior to marriage with long, bleached hair, a micro dress and 5 inch heels. Bait and switch biitches need a good thumpin’ to remind them what fuels the gravy train, eh?

None-the-less, Dr. Yu, I think the real reason Korean men don’t marry Western women is because their families will not accept it.

(There is a lot of truth to the accusations of Korean men being mama’s boys… at least from a Western point of view… which through media and entertainment is influencing the expectations of young Korean women as we speak.)

While marriage may not be, sexx with Western women is perfectly acceptable… haven’t seen any Korean guys turn that down when presented even the possibility of an opportunity to get some… the blonder, the better.

…but, come to think of it, I don’t recall any guys, anywhere, doing any differnently… regardless of where she was from, what she looked like or how many cold sores she had on her lips. Alcohol and military enlistments increase the likelihood of this condition.

“A second reason why Korean man don’t want a western women is that western women don’t fit the Korean (Asian) servitude role for women and is this same very reason why some Korean women prefer western men because they no longer want this role.”

Yes. My wife and I stay home, drink wine and watch movies while her sisters are cooking, cleaning and stuck in traffic for hours and hours on holidays.

Chuseok and Solal are the two times where every woman she knows says, “You are soooo lucky to have a foreign husband.” She smiles and agrees… then we go back to the other 363 days a year where she complains that a foreign husband is a social and professional handicap.

“These Korean women usually have strong personality or a very strong sense of individuality and they use to play the “chief of the family” role when married to a western man.”

I would agree with that statement but I first have to ask my wife if I am allowed to. Within 24 hours of marriage, I ceded a lot of power to my wife. But she takes care of business and it makes her feel empowered. Why fight the system?

I have seen a few weak-personality Korean women marry Western men… and, in most cases, the girl was very nice but her husband was a complete diick. Kinda sad.

“Most Korean women don’t want western man so what most western guys get in Korea are those who don’t fit Korean tradition,”

I don’t know if the first part is true but the second certainly is. I had a couple of very traditional Korean girlfriends from very traditional Korean families that were interested in exploring the fantasy of an exotic foreign man… not an uncommon thing, I think… although only a percentage act upon it.

The first one broke up with me when her father saw a picture of us together and told her if she “met the foreign man again” he would “disown her as a daughter”. Wise father, probably.

The second one met me secretly until her family arranged a marriage for her. She was none-too-happy with this but she did her duty and married the dentist. I spoke to her a few times since and she is accepting of her lot in life and as content as she can be with a credit card and an 50 thousand dollar car.

What Western guys do get for Korean wives are abnormal women… women who are willing to go against Korean society… not something to be taken lightly.

There is an occasional over-achieving woman of exceptional personality and drive who has escaped the restrictions of Korean social and cultural expectations…

…but, more likely than not, Korean women willing to marry a foreign husband are abnormal in a bad way… half-crazy and borderline dysfunctional… especially if they met at the local foreigners’ bar where she gets drunk and goes home with a different guy every night until one decides to marry her.

At least, these have been my observations.

    Westinghouse,

“Much of the Korean genome evolved in Arctic climes (think Altaic, Tungusic, Siberian peoples) whose environmental pressures tended to favor more “beta” type males, male provisioning, more monogamous and long-term pair bonding, etc., over more “alpha” types, physical and social dominance, etc. that tend to be favored in relatively more “benign” environments”

This made some sense. I casually presented this theory to my wife. She peeked over the top of her netbook and gave me the Stupid Look.

“Did you come up with that yourself or are you just repeating some nonsense you read on the Internet?”

Before I could answer, she added,

“So, tell me how the vikings fit into this crackpot theory of yours?”

She looked back down at her netbook and we both said no more.

Any ideas how I can reclaim my scientific manhood?
