It is incredible that as quickly as we had global warming alarmism now we have people trying to promote a “Mini-Ice Age” alarmism as well:
The ongoing winter has shattered many records in Korea’s modern meteorological history and more records are expected to be rewritten before it is over.
Record high snowfall in central parts of the country early this month already broke a 73-year-old record. In Seoul on Wednesday, the mercury dropped to minus 15.3 degrees Celsius, challenging the lowest temperature in the capital city of -16.7 degrees, set on Jan. 22, 2004.
Southern parts of the peninsula are also struggling with “unprecedented” blizzards.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Younggwang, a rural country in South Jeolla Province, was bombarded with 20.5 centimeters of snow, while other towns in the vicinity saw snowfall ranging from three to 10 centimeters.
“It’s rare to see such heavy snow in southern parts of the country,” a KMA official said.
The KMA said the entire peninsula will experience cold temperatures until Saturday, but added that it will be slightly warmer next week. It cited an overly expanded continental high pressure front over Russia as the major culprit for the unusual weather.
But it seems that Korea is not an isolated victim by the unexpected inclement weather. As reported, parts of China, Europe and the United States have also been hit by their largest snowfall ever, causing massive flight cancelations and road traffic problems.
Many domestic and international weather experts blame the unexpected cold spell sweeping the northern hemisphere on global warming, or the El Nino phenomenon. Some specialists recently brought up the possibility that it is a sign of what they call the beginning of a “Mini-Ice Age.” [Korea Times]
The bottom line is that the climate has always changed and always will. The world in recent decades has warmed, but over the past few years it has cooled. However, that doesn’t mean it couldn’t warm again. But, it is important to remember the historical context this warming is part of. The world has warmed since the last Ice Age and it didn’t take people driving SUV’s to do it. Likewise it is important to remember that other times in history it was even warmer than today.
The most important thing to remember is that none of the global warming alarmists highly trumpeted computer models predicted the cooling trend. Plus their theory that increased Co2 increases temperatures is now full of holes considering the unprecedented increase in Co2 emissions and the failure of the global temperature to increase with it.
So basically the weather is acting like it always has, ever changing and unpredictable.

Growing up as a kid in the 90’s I was told over and over again in class that by now the Ozone would have been depleted.

Despite what the Global Warming guys have been saying, the past decade has been COOLING. This is fact and all the selective deletions from the Global Warming proponents with the IPCC can’t hide the facts.
The latest news is that their will be GLOBAL cooling for the next 50 years. All too technical for my pea-brain to fathom, but all I do know is the hot-water pipes froze this winter and I tend to believe the global cooling folks.

Source?

The chart two-thirds down labeled “Global Monthly Mean Surface Temperature Change” expands the last decade and is inconclusive, but it certainly does not indicate a cooling.

Your first problem is that you are looking at data from Jim Hansen who is notorious for hiding data just like the CRU folks and when someone reversed engineered his numbers he was shown to be a fraud:
http://rokdrop.com/2007/08/15/its-official-global-warming-is-man-made/
Now that he is being forced to answer FOIA requests slowly emails are coming out showing the problems over there:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/01/14/foiad-emails-from-hansen-and-giss-staffers-show-disagreement-over-1998-1934-u-s-temperature-ranking/
Hansen’s name also pops up in the ClimateGate emails so he is well known with the alarmist crowd and may have learned temperature manipulation tricks from them which he is now being accused of:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/01/14/more-on-john-colemans-special-tonight-kusi-press-release-says-nasa-improperly-manipulated-data/
These temperature tricks are all being uncovered now such as in New Zealand and Australia where they were used to show warming trends.
Because of the data manipulation as well as the urban heat island effect, satellite temperature data is proving to be the most accurate which shows the cooling:

JoeC,
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/dec/03/nasa-embroiled-in-climate-dispute/
It seems NASA engaged in the same type of “climate research” that the “scientists” at University of East Anglia practiced.
In today’s political climate at NASA, any dip in temperatures means they dropped so much that no amount of massaging could make them fit the official agenda.
It doesn’t help that NASA won’t release any raw data nor will they release the source code for the algorithms used to calculate the value-added (quality controlled and homogenized) data.
Publishing all raw data and methodology, so that independent researchers can give scrutiny and then replicate the results, is a fundamental and necessary part of modern scientific research.
Failure to do this is one of the signs that scientific fraud is being perpetuated… even more-so when the release of this information is being actively blocked.
You can trust that chart about as much as you can trust a USFK PowerPoint presentation about how black marketing is at an all-time low.

So, if NASA data can’t be trusted, I go back to my question. What source supports the claim that there has been a cooling over the past decade?

Gee…sources??? That’s hard. With 30,000 scientists (that’s the number on one petition) contributing articles, it must be hard to find sources on a simple Google search.
As for me, I can’t keep track of sources too well, so I put it all on a small webpage for my info at http://kalaniosullivan.com/BO/BOPtIIb.html about the ecology.
However, I also realize that the bottom line is that if you are a Global Warming proponent, no amount of sources will change your mind. Faith-based religions are like that. So let’s just agree to disagree.

I’m agnostic on the issue. But my point is, if no data can be trusted, you can no more claim the earth is cooling than you can assert the earth isn’t warming.

@JOEC
That is why real scientists want the data to be made public along with all models and methods used for the study’s. Once everything can be seen in the open and reviewed THEN we can determine if the world is warming / cooling and what might be the cause.
The thing is, if the world really was “warming” then the alarmists would of released the data a long time ago. There wouldn’t be a need to “massage” the data or “hide the decline”. There wouldn’t be the need for secrecy and collusion to get anti-CO2 legislation passed and all this other hum-bum if the world was actually warming.
Satellite’s temperature data is fairly recent (in the big picture of things) so it can only paint a picture of a relativity small frame. What is has shown is that the world has actually been cooling over the past decade, even though man made CO2 has skyrocketed. Now a few decades of data isn’t nearly enough to do any form of analysis, but it does disprove what the AGW folks have been trying to cram down our throats lately.

“I’m agnostic on the issue. But my point is, if no data can be trusted, you can no more claim the earth is cooling than you can assert the earth isn’t warming.”
I understand. How about this…
In at least two major cases, the scientists and institutions who are publishing these charts have been busted manipulating the data to insure they definitely do not show a recognized and discussed cooling trend.
Further, in both cases they have done everything possible to hide original data, obscure methodology and counter doubts of their conclusions emotionally in the press rather than scientifically in the journals.
They have gone out of their way to inhibit the type of independent peer review that discredited the “hockey stick graph”… and would likely discredit much of the global warming “science” that is being perpetuated today.
I don’t know if man-made global warming is real… or even if global warming is real…
…but I’m pretty sure that when politicians are hastily pushing an agenda that only leads to more taxes and more regulations… while making them richer and more powerful… and they are bribing unethical scientists with manufactured prestige and research dollars to fake numbers and stifle descent…
…it is probably something every intelligent citizen should look at with a little more skepticism than is being done by the dumbed-down (yet voting) population that exists today.
Anyone who yaps on and on about global warming without showing some heavy consideration about this cannot be taken seriously or even respected as a rational thinker.
