I was at the 1000 won store a few months ago and they had little portable ashtrays... a stylish black plastic tube with a latching flip-top lid that holds a few butts.

I gave them to all my smoker friends, both foreign and domestic. Most of them carry them with them at all times now... and they always mention them.

Also, when I see a Korean throw a butt or litter, I give them a sad look and say, "Korea is such a beautiful country. Why would you make it dirty with trash?"

Ho, ho, ho... that has NEVER failed to get 'em scrambling to pick up their crap along with lots of bows and apologies... and I bet it is a better long-term habit changing strategy than most other methods. I also make a show of picking up some litter nearby and taking it to a trash can.

Also, in the warm weather when I go diving, boating and rafting... often taking 30+ Koreans who know nothing of diving, boating or rafting... I bring trash bags and assign everyone an area to clean up. The whole concept of "take more than you brought" is kinda alien... but Koreans are smart people and it quickly makes sense. They don't want to have a lakeside picnic surrounded by discarded fishing lure packages, kimbab foil and cigarette-related crap.

Remember, America also had a culture of litter that didn't start going away until the Woodsy Owl campaign in the 70s.

While visiting Japan, I noticed some Japanese men disposing of cigarette butts in a small metal tin that they carried in their pockets.

All Koreans of all ages need to learn how to use a garbage can. Koreans are littering all the time. They need to learn how to put the garbage in the garbage can or recycling bin.

As a matter of fact, Koreans should learn from the Germans to make an efficient recycling system in Korea.

I've always been quite impressed with the cherry-flick that most Korean smokers do.

You should see the outside of our building now. All of the genius smokers 'hid' their butts in the snow, and now that it's gone, we have the beautiful display of a hundred butts right outside the door. Thanks!

As a smoker, I never throw my butts on the ground. They are either of disposed properly or they go in a pocket for proper disposal later. I remember picking up butts on police call and no one will be picking up mine. I do see many smokers who are not so contentious. So listen up; if self discipline isn't the reason, we already have everyone against us. This is easy and make a visible difference. Police your own butts! It's easy and Jesus will love you even more.
