Korean Wife Causes Political Dispute In Australia

» by GI Korea in: Australia

Accusations of racial discrimination are being thrown around Down Under due to a politician having a Korean wife:

A RACE row has erupted at a Melbourne council with a former Greens candidate accused of telling a fellow councillor not to vote on “Asian matters” because he has a Korean wife.

Manningham Cr Ivan Reid accused Cr David Ellis of telling him to butt out of Asian issues that arise on the council.

The council’s first public meeting of the year was last week rocked by the allegation, which has been verified by Manningham Mayor Charles Pick, but angrily denied by Cr Ellis.

Cr Reid told the council meeting Cr Ellis had a “hidden cultural agenda” over the proposed expansion of an all-Chinese nursing home in Donvale.

“He stated that I should abstain from Asian issues because my wife is Asian,” Cr Reid told the meeting.  (…………..)

“He started saying that because my wife is a Korean I should declare a conflict of interest in any Asian matters and not get involved in any Asian matters,” he said. “I was shocked. I think there might be an ethnic angle he’s got and I think people can draw their own conclusions.”

Cr Pick said: “I can’t deny that it happened, but we’re committed to moving forward.  [Herald-Sun]

I guess people married to white women shouldn’t be involved with anything dealing with white people then to use this guys logic. What is also further interesting about this is that Councillor Reid who is married to the Korean wife is half Chinese himself.  Wouldn’t you think his family ties to the Chinese community had more to do with his promoting of a Chinese nursing home than being married to a Korean woman?

Talk about putting your foot into your mouth.

More proof that politicians are mostly bottom feeders. Ellis needs to resign as unfit as a human being.

lol.. Asian issues? That’s like saying I can’t have a say in ‘White’ issues because my gf is an American. How is an all Chinese nursing home have anything to do with a Korean wife? Just because both things are ‘Asian’ you can lump them together? Face Palm.

I would have dealt with the insult Korean National Assembly style: shoes would have been flying, knees would have come in contact with testicles. I guarantee grown men would have been crying.

Unbelievable, it looks like people will use anything to throw stones at another. I guess he shouldn’t vote on matters concerning females since his wife is female.

The Australian media would have dubbed it, “The night of the flying shoes”.

I’ve been putting this off for awhile since I’m in America and this story is from Australia. However, it hits what I find to be an interesting point. This couple could have been any other racial/ethnic/gender combination and nobody would have said a word. But for some reason lots of people seem to think it okay to make ignorant comments when the couple involved consists of a white (or white-ish in this case) male and Asian female. I wonder why this is the case?

    The whole thing is pathetic.

I do find it weird because the guy is half Chinese. His blood isn’t pure and on top of that, he’s married to a Korean and their children’s blood isn’t pure! Do her parents know of this union? I wonder.

Despite living in racist Australia, he was elected to and holds political office. He’s got mixed blood in him, how did it all happen?!

Just out of curiousity, how many biracial politicians have been elected to and hold public office in Korea anyway? Anyone know? A Korean called Tom? Anyone?
