Picture of the Day: Gangwon’s Snowy Slopes

Skiers enjoy late-winter skiing at a resort in Gangwon Province on February 11. (Yonhap News)

By the way does anyone find it funny that Korea lost the 2010 Winter Olympics partly because of the fear of not having enough snow, but it turns out this year Korea has a lot of snow but Vancouver doesn’t.

If Vancouver was like that, I'm wondering how Sochi will be.

    7Ø7,

Vancouver isn't like that. Look. The pole has padding on it.

Yes. (see here, because I'm a link whore).

Actually, though, I thought that was the speculation of the K-blogs, not something from the IOC itself. After all, Korea almost won on the earlier ballot and the IOC ended up picking a Russian summer resort for the 2014 games.

    Shaun White WINS GOLD!!!!!!!!

That's about the only event that's worth watching IMO.

I see the Olympics in Vancouver irony actually.

Isn't Canada actually like second to Russia in the snow and cold department? However…

Vancouver basically has three ecosystems rolled up into one area, one of which is a RAINFOREST. It blows my mind that the would host the Winter Olympics there.

Anyway, I was glad Canada won out to host the thing.

It's great that Shaun won the gold in 1000m BUT it just doesn't shine that brightly IMO when he barely beat Mo, who won the gold in 500m.

Mo completed and won gold in the 500m race (and 500m is NOT his specialty). Shaun withdrew from 500m to save energy for his best race, 1000m. Could Shaun have beat Mo in 1000m if Shaun had completed the 500m race? Looking at the margin between Shaun and Mo in 1000m, there's high chance that Shaun couldn't have won the gold.

I guess gold is gold but still…

I think you got your events mixed up. I'm not even that interested in winter Olympics but I do like to get facts straight.

Shaun White is a half-pipe extreme-sport snowboard god. I think you may be referring to Shani Davis, the speed skater who won the 1000 meter race.

I know. All those Americans look alike. Look at their pictures. They could be twins.

Shani Davis, BTW, was Anton Ohno's best friend and roommate who Ohno was supposed to have colluded to get him qualified into the 2006 Olympics.

    Fun facts.

Dang should've googled. Ok, how could I get mixed up between the scrawny white guy and a black skater. I admit, I don't follow any of the winter sports at all. Only during the winter olympic time.

    Forgive my ignorance.

But don't you agree that the gold of Shani Davis just doesn't shine that much?

Correction: Instead of 2006 Olympics, I meant 2002 Olympics.

"But don’t you agree that the gold of Shani Davis just doesn’t shine that much?"

I don't know. Is there a future after Olympics speed skating?

You also said, "gold is gold." I think that is more to the point. After the Olympics and whatever fleeting endorsements medal winners get, most of these athletes will be quickly forgotten, except for the record books. The true winners will be the ones who follow up on their Olympic achievements. You don't even have to win gold to do that.

In 1988, the Summer Olympics were held in Seoul Korea. There was a memorable boxing match between a Korean named Park Si-Hun and an American named Roy Jones Jr. One of them won the gold medal and the other won the silver. One of them went on to become one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the world. The other was never heard from again.

It's very easy to tell them apart: Shani Davis is the one for whom Apolo Ohno threw a race in order to get him into the Olympics back in 2002, and Shaun White isn't.

    @KUSHIBO

"Shani Davis is the one for whom Apolo Ohno threw a race in order to get him into the Olympics back in 2002"

I thought you were joking but Ohno very likely did help fix a race to get Davis into the Olympics.

    wow, a punk and a race fixer…

Well, if the US loses out on whatever in regards to the Olympics, Canada is the next logical country to root for IMO.

It's a gold and he worked hard to earn it. Kudos to him.

Lee Sanghwa's gold in women's 500-meter speedskating was only by 0.05 seconds, and I wouldn't call her undeserving.

    Go, Shani!

    Ohno is still a punk.
