Apolo Anton Ohno Involved In Yet Another Olympics Controversy

Not all the criticism leveled at American short track speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno is fair, but this time he is obviously trying to create a controversy:

There was no grand finale, no gold medal – and sadly, no class from Apolo Anton Ohno as the final moments of his career ticked away Friday night.

Ohno went down as the greatest short-track speedskater in history when he took what are likely to be his final Olympic laps here, but he did nothing for his reputation with a needless and baseless swipe at a celebrating host nation.

By lashing out at the judges who disqualified him from the 500-meter final, Ohno ended his Olympic career much as it began in 2002: with controversy.

“You know, it is the head Canadian referee [Michel Verrault] out there,” said Ohno, with a smirk and a shrug. “And there were two Canadians in the race.”

Ohno, who could have skated into the sunset simply thankful to be adorned with yet another medal-gaining Olympic Games, instead offered remarks that were unfair and unfounded, that came across as an attempt to take some sheen off a truly golden night for Canada.  [Yahoo Sports]

Such a comment is obviously classless, but I do have to wonder why they had a Canadian refereeing the race in the first place, which would have prevented such accusations from being lodged in the first place?  It seems like in short track you can’t have a race without crashes and disqualifications pissing someone off.

Anyway Ohno went on to win a bronze medal in a relay event following this race giving him a total of 8 Olympic medals.  It will be interesting to see if Ohno tries to come back for the next Olympics at age 31 to try and add to his medal count.

Love him or hate him Apolo Anton Ohno at least makes great blogging material.

They had a Canadian reffing the final because the head referee from the previous races and events leading up to 500m was receiving large amounts of e-mail and other death threats for DQ'ing the Koreans earlier. He was actually in the arena Friday night with his own security escort.

I liked how the Korean skater, when in the midst of falling, looked to his left and used his left hand to try and sweep the Canadian's skates. That looked more evident of a foul than Ohno putting his hand on the hip of the Canadian.

But then again, I couldn't care any less about the event

This just makes absolutely no sense to me. Do we need another scandal like during Salt Lake (when the Russians, with the French, cheated to get their figure skating pair atop the podium)?

Yea you do care. Otherwise why would you even mention this? Trying to sweep with his hands at the opponent's blades which is going like 70km per hour? Either he's crazy or you're making things up in your head. Please use your head.

Goood kimchi in heaven! I find myself partly agreeing with a korean named Tom.

Maybe if Koreans hadn't made DEATH THREATS against the Aussie official, a Canadian wouldn't have been used to officiate. Ever think of that Koreans?

Because of KOREANS, Hewish is supposedly under police protection in Vancouver and his home in Australia is under police guard. Great sportsmanship displayed there. Why aren't the majority of people in Korea speaking against this bs? why aren't they rising up en masse and speaking against this crap?

If I could, I'd donate my Remington 870 to the guy so he could take care of any problems himself. Alas, it ain't a perfect world!

Apolo can be an ass, that's true and I don't disagree, but Korean natioanls are looking like some of the worst losers in the world right now and they are doing it in someone else's country! Death threats, bomb threats…what's

    next?

A question for Koreans and gyopo draft dodgers who qualify as such. If foreigners came to Korea and started making death threats against people, what would be the reaction of people and media in Korea? Please, no double talk don't dodge the question.

Koreans should pick up the pieces of their broken lives and try again next time just like everyone else is doing and will do. There's always the 2014 Olympics.

Korea has done pretty good for itself, I will admit that. They have nothing to be ashamed about.

I think the only thing that saved the Korean skater from getting DQ'd was that even though he made the Canadian skater spin out of control, the Canadian still won the race.

These "death threats" being made by Koreans to the Aussie judge are BS. It's a handful of douche bag netizens sitting at their keyboards popping zits, slurping ramyon and posting evil "death threats." You'd have to be a complete idiot to actually think there's anything of substance behind them.

Hey a korean called Tom, I've been holding off on this for a long time a korean called Tom.

My paternal grandfather was Chinese! Only about 75% of me is "white" there "yellow" girl. Guess I'll cut that part out of me so I'll be purely white.

This means, my blood is not pure a korean called Tom and the KKK would never accept me. I know, that's probably hard for a pure blood like yourself to get their heads around, but try it.

You know the Chinese Tom,the people who I've heard countless korean nationals, many of whom were my students, call dirty, loud and arrogant.

And considering how the majority of YOU korean nationals allow biracial Koreans to be treated, you are the last ones who should talk about the KKK.

  • JohnT

Get one thing straight, to make death threats in Canada is ILLEGAL.

Korean nationals, Korean apologists and those worthy of being called gyopo draft dodgers are the first to talk about Englishee teachers behaving badly in korea and breaking the law, yet they are the first to make excuses for koreans who do so.

It doesn't matter if they are a few douche bags, it's illegal you bunch of hyopcrites!

Making death threats against ANYONE regardless of who they are or based on their is wrong. I've never stated anything to the contrary.

Don't you have some Filippinos to kick out of little Manila Tom.

For Tom and all the others like him, it is not just "white" people who complain about korea.

    @Tom

The fact that racism exists in countries other than Korea and is practiced by peoples other than Koreans does not mean its ok when Koreans do it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2rvfM3ALvo

Racism should be universally condemned. Tom your view of other countries do it so its ok is severely misguided.

You use the word "hypocritical" to describe others but all of the examples you site occur in Korea. Blacks, SE Asians, Pakistanis are discriminated against by Koreans. In fact the video you gave a link to has a comment by a Korean saying, "in korea, pakistan people are causing too much trouble."

    Tom…

You are using racism, culturalism and nationalism interchangeably and it is killing any point you might be trying to make.

In Korea, the race, culture and nation, are pretty close together… so it is somewhat understandable.

It is not exactly like that in America where a certain degree of racial and cultural "diversity" has traditionally been accepted… with many good aspects of other cultures willingly adopted by American society.

(This is not to be confused with the current fad of forced diversity that intentionally doesn't separate the acceptable and rejectable aspects of other cultures no matter how crappy they are).

Regardless of what inflammatory news the media manufactures or what fiery talk comes from attention-seeking "minority leadership", there is a large percentage of Americans who recognize there to be a difference, even subconsciously, and act accordingly… basing their association more on like thinking and shared values than on race, gender, cultural background or national identity.

The real problem you have here, Tom, is that many people on this blog just don't like Korea or Koreans… and it isn't really about nationalism, culturalism or racism.

It is because there are some irritated GIs that don't want to be in Korea away from their cars and families, some burned-out-on-Korea contractors that are trapped here in a well-paying job unavailable elsewhere, a few bitter guys with crappy Korean (ex)wives which they blame on being a Korea problem rather than a woman problem (or their own problem) and some otherwise-unemployable English "teachers" who had no other options but to take a job which required a lifestyle change they were not really mentally, socially or emotionally prepared to make.

And all their unhappiness over the situation they find themselves in requires a target… and it generally becomes the nation they are in that never "does things as good as back home".

You can find this same mentality in every expat community in the world… probably even in Korea Town where Koreans biitch about America, black people and those who don't take off their shoes when entering a house.

Relax, Tom. Don't take it all so seriously.

PS. Remember when you said there were no successful Asian music stars and I listed a page-full? I thought of another… Vanessa-Mae. See, things aren't as bad as you think.

PPS. I think you got beat up in school because of your attitude rather than your race. Relax, man.

Please people; look at the whole picture. An omission is the same thing as a lie.

Take a look at the video and look where Hamelin's right hand is. It pushed the left side of the Korean skater, this in turn made his own left hand swing back. It was Hamelin that initiated the push.

If the Korean was slipping why would Hamelin need to push him off. The law of physics dictates that an object moving laterally will be passed by an object moving foward. Anyone watch NASCAR??

And why is it some contemptuous canadian has to bring in the Koreans. It was Ohno that accused Canada of cheating, it was a Canadian judge that DQ'ed Ohno, but still Korea is mentioned again. Ohno said something that everyone around the world was thinking.

And for the record James Hewish has DQ'ed 5 Korean skaters since 1992, and always when the gold medal was on the line. This precedence goes beyond the law of probability.

So go ahead Hamelin take your tainted gold medal, Rochette take your sympathy bronze.

The white man has always killed Asians for their gold, like the Chinese prospectors during the Yukon gold rush who were killed for their claims. Of course Canadian history will never teach you that.

The Chinese rail road workers who were denied any credit for their work, there is not one picture that shows their contribution.

And now they omit Hamelin's right hand pushing the Korean skater. Yeah Canada.

    So Canada

"And for the record James Hewish has DQ’ed 5 Korean skaters since 1992, and always when the gold medal was on the line. This precedence goes beyond the law of probability."

There is no single law of probability. To determine probability, one needs to know the number of a particular outcome and the number of total outcomes. In this case, one needs to know the number of Korean skaters, the total number of skaters, and the total number of disqualifications for the races in question to determine whether Korean skaters are more likely to be disqualified. Hope you get back to us with the calculations, thanks.

There are many gyopos who I consider not to be such and others who deserve to be called such. If they, fall into that category than that's what they are…no?

For example, I had a born and raised in America, Korean-American coworker that would go on and on about "foreigners" spoiling Korea! Funny how non Koreans are over here to protect korea and may HAVE TO DIE for korea, yet he and others like him do nothing for korea but pay lip service.

You see I considered him to be an American, not a korean, until that shit rolled out of his mouth. Yes, ethnically he is Korean, but to me he was only an American…was!

It's people like him that I consider to be gyopo draft dodgers- and there are many like him.

NO korean can deny that. And everyone else is suppposed to be the barbarians.

Oh and Ohno is a biracial American and he's a superstar. How many biracial Korean athletes represented korea in this year's Olympics? No double talk just answer the question.

As an Asian growing up in the US, there is no doubt in my mind that Whites are the most racist and the least forgiving of any race that I've experienced in my 37 yrs in the U.S. These guys that complain about Koreans and Korea make me laugh because the reality is that nobody in this world gets treated better than white people. This includes Korea.

I've experienced all kinds of racism and discrimination from white people all my life and you know what they say when you speak out against it? White people will tell you to get over it! Go back to China! Why'd you bomb Pearl Harbor! Ching Chong this Ching Chong that! You're not a real American, where are you really from? What's your real name?

Everything these guys complain about i've exerienced it a thousand times in America but for some reason, when it happens to me, i need to get over it or my experience aren't valid but every little negative thing they experience in Korea and they cry and whine like little bitches.

I here you Jamm. It is true that white people do get treated a lot better in Korea than an Asian would in America.

The thing is that white folk are not use to being discriminated against. They actually believe that everyone will just like them, irrespective of their attitudes or behavior.

Korea is not a land of immigrants, it has a long history. It has been sandwiched between 2 superpowers for thousands of years, they have been invaded by the Mongols, Chinese and Japanese. and they are still here. 10th largest economy in the world with no natural resources, and geographically it maybe a peninsula but economically it is an island. Everything has to be brought in by sea.

So to all the white folk bitching about Korea, now you have a taste of what an Asian American has to deal with forever!
