Picture of the Day: US Marines During the Korean War

Marines outside Pusan relax before battle.

I highly recommend everyone view the series of color photographs from the Korean War by journalist John Rich.

This made the rounds through the K-blogs in 2008 (see here and here), but it's always worth it to bring these to the public's attention.

The strikingly realistic color photography really adds an element of contemporariness to the photos, making a scene that could just as easily be today in some neighborhoods (John Rich sitting on his rooftop) as 1950.

He was alive, at age 91, back in 2008. Not sure about now. There should be a Wikipedia entry on him, but there isn't.

Those are some nice photos. I like the reconstruction one, with the wooden frames going up.

What? No reflective belts? How did these people live??
