Navy Petty Officer Arrested for Drunk Driving & Accident In A HMMWV On Okinawa

» by in: Japan

I have never heard of a servicemember drunk driving in a HMMWV before, but if you were going to do it Okinawa is definitely not the place to be trying it:

A 25-year-old sailor admitted to driving the U.S. Navy Humvee involved in a hit-and-run in the Camp Schwab area, Okinawa police said Friday.A 45-year-old Okinawa man and his two sons were slightly injured when the military vehicle rear-ended their compact car on Route 329 in Henoko about 10:55 p.m. Tuesday. An eyewitness told police she saw the Humvee speed away after the impact.

Okinawa police found an abandoned Navy Humvee about seven miles south of the collision scene with its engine still running. A Navy spokeswoman said the sailor, a petty officer third class, was apprehended by military police about two hours later as she was walking down the road.

An Okinawa police spokesman said the sailor was not in uniform.

The sailor, a member of a Gulfport, Miss., unit deployed to Camp Shields on Okinawa, has been in military custody since the incident. She was transported to an Okinawa police station in Kadena on Thursday for questioning.

“She told our investigators that she took the Humvee truck from the base and drove it after consuming alcohol at her on-base residence,” a police spokesman said Friday. “Shortly after she was apprehended by military authorities near where she abandoned the truck, Okinawa police officers gave her a Breathalyzer test at the request of the military officers.”  [Stars & Stripes]

These dumbasses that do things like this do not think about the consequences their actions have.  Could you imagine the fall out if she would have killed that family in that car she hit instead of injuring them?  It could have turned into the Okinawa version of Korea 2002.

With that said there was definitely a major breakdown in security here.  How did she get keys to the motorpool to get a HMMWV?  How did she get off post in the HMMWV late at night?  Why didn’t anyone at the gate notice her wearing civilian clothes?  I have a feeling that more than just this Navy petty officer will go down in flames for this incident.

No. The Air Force goes down in flames.

The Navy just goes down… or gets sunk… or has their career torpedoed…

…but the Navy has been known to go down ON flames.

There is no way you could ever fabricate a crap-story like this. In addition to the AFN commercials about never shaking your baby, don't get pregnant in high-school, and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, don't be that guy, add another one: Don't get drunk and steal a HMMWV?

The stupidity of some service members never ceases to amaze me and leads me to believe that I could have become God.

Women drivers… just kidding. Actually Seoul drivers are not so good either but most of them are men.
