South Korea Grants Refugee Citizenship For the First Time

I have to wonder why this guy was granted refugee status from Ethiopia of all places?:

South Korea has granted citizenship to a refugee from Ethiopia, the first-ever such decision since it adopted the 1951 Refugee Convention, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said Tuesday. The 38-year-old Ethiopian, whose name was withheld, fled persecution in his country and arrived in South Korea in 2001. He was given refugee status before being granted citizenship.”This is a highly significant milestone in Asia, where few countries have signed the 1951 Refugee Convention, and even fewer have extended citizenship to refugees,” said UNHCR spokesperson Melissa Fleming.”We are grateful to the Republic of Korea for its leadership in local integration, one of the three durable solutions available to refugees, and one that is rarely used in Asia,” she added.South Korea adopted the 1951 Refugee Convention in 1994, which includes the granting of citizenship as the most significant step to allow a recognized refugee to integrate into a society.  [Earth Times]

Korea had a Bangladeshi and a Nigerian… and now an Ethiopian.

What did they do? Subscribe to The Franklin Mint's Fine Collection of Miserable People of the World?

In 6 weeks, do the get the Liberian?

…but I heard they took advantage of The Franklin Mint’s Satisfaction Guarantee and sent the Pakistani back. He musta been a bit cracked.

    What's next?

A subscription to Time-Life's 50-volume set of Loser English Teachers of The United States?

    Wait. They have several copies.

Thirteen volumes of Whining Potheads of the Great White North?

    Nope… already got it.

    Collectible Dolls of Cambodia?

    Ahhh… it was canceled.

Korea is hard to shop for.

Pathetic attempt at humor by chickenhead aside, I believe the reason that an Ethiopian was granted citizenship is due to the fact that Ethiopia was one of 16 nations to send combat troops to the Korean War as part of the UN.
