Expats In Korea Rally to Help Sick Teenager

The effort by an American expat to find blood donors for a sick Korean teenager that a featured here last week on the ROK Drop appears to be having some success:

On March 16, 19-year-old Jeon Yoo-woon was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer which originates in the immune system.

The disease attacks the platelet in his blood, preventing it from clotting after a wound. With his platelet levels dangerously low, he desperately needs donations. However, his blood type is B Rh-negative, which is extremely rare in Koreans.

Donations were initially insufficient. But, over the past week, thanks to an Internet campaign launched by an expatriate, six donors stepped forward and four others are planning to donate.

“I started a Facebook page because I think it is hard for Koreans to get connected with the foreign community,” said Marie Frenette, an American living in Korea. “I think a Facebook page is a good way to spread the word.”

The Internet campaign has attracted strong interest from the expatriate community. Nearly 200 people have confirmed their support on the Facebook page – “Save A 19 Year Old Korean Boy!” It has also been posted on by popular English language bloggers such as The Marmot’s Hole and Brian-in-Jeollanamdo.  [Korea Times]
