Not sure how effective this is but they seem to be intent on convincing the U.S. that Dokdo belongs to Korea and the sea surrounding it should be called the East Sea.
First a full-page ad in The New York Times and then a 30-second video played on a Times Square billboard. So what’s next to promote Korea’s ownership of Dokdo in the U.S.?
They designed and created blue elastic bracelets with the words “Dokdo is Korean Territory” and “East Sea is Korea” written on them. With the initial distribution starting in New York and New Jersey, KALA co-chair Hwang Sung-ho says the campaign will soon go national. [The Korea Times]
Do you think these types of campaigns in the U.S. are going to help or hurt Korea’s efforts with Dokdo?

No one in the USA cares about Dokdo. Why keep bringing it up?
7:36 am on April 8th, 2010 2
Why do the K-blogs keep bringing it up?

Sure way to get their names in the Korean papers.

Most people in the Unites States couldnt even point to Korea on the map, muchless care about this small uninhabited island. Hope some koreans read your blog. My message: Get a grip Korea ! settle your own disputes dont bring the US into such meaningless issues.

I'm going to say that most Americans that have not had some type of relationship with Korea are not that interested in things Korean let alone their pathetic attachment to some useless island in the SEA OF JAPAN!!! Do Koreans truly think anyone is listening? No one cares!!!

There is a big billboard on the way to Dongdaemun now. It is on on the walking median and says "DokDo …"with and arrow and the number of kilometers next to it. So, for whatever reason, the ROK govt is hot on this right now.

The following picture should be on a giant billboard in every major city in America.

The 오징어 sign on the upper left is AWESOME.

This issue makes me feel bad for Koreans. The Japanese use the Dokdo issue to make Koreans look foolish and petty, and the Koreans take to it like flies to shit. Thus Japan appears to take the highground and to be the more classy of the two. I wish Koreans would realize how the Dokdo issue is not an issue but how the goverment deflects attention from their own short commings Jaan&Korean goverments that is. It is propaganda!! We know Japan did bad things to your country a long time ago but clingy to Dokdo makes you look foolish and petty like the aforementioned flies to shit context.

What does all that say?
6:34 pm on April 8th, 2010 10
Because Koreans keep buying ads in the USA.
6:52 pm on April 8th, 2010 11
If that's the reason, fine. But Tokto seems much more on the average anglophone's radar — and by that I mean how much it gets talked about — than it is on the average KoKo's radar.
6:53 pm on April 8th, 2010 12
The ROK government put up the billboard?
6:55 pm on April 8th, 2010 13
The small signs at the top say "I love Tokto."
The signs in the front row say Tokto is ours.
Manifest Dokdony.

Did they invest this much money to get American sympathy and attention to the Comfort Women issue?
8:46 pm on April 8th, 2010 15
Well, I'm not sure how much money was spent, but "they" did get the US House to pass a resolution on the Comfort Women issue (LINK).

I think that the K-bloggers (myself included) bring it up for the same reason that many Koreans bring it up. They think Japan's actions are stupid, and we think the Koreans are being stupid about it.
We don't have to comment on the stupidity… it's not life-or-death… but it's hard to let these things go.
The only people being mature about it are the Japanese.

Yes. It's in the middle of the public sidewalk.
4:11 am on April 9th, 2010 18
Can you take a picture of it next time you see it?
Since even the dome-topped yellow-and-white pylons in the middle of the street that indicate crosswalks are privately paid for, I'm not so sure this being in the middle of the sidewalk means it was paid for and put up by the government.

Tried this morning, camera was out of battery.
I should pass that way again Tuesday and will try.

Why do some posts, that show up on the main page in the "Recent Comments" section not show when you scroll through the thread??
2:59 pm on April 9th, 2010 21
Try this. Click on the main topic links on the main page or in the Recent Comments section, first. That will bring in all the comments. Then clicking a on individual comment link under that topic in the Recent Comments section will bring you to it.
For some reason, clicking on comments by the commenter name link first, does not always refresh and bring in all the comments for the topic.
I have an idea for why that might be happening, but it's technical.

I know why the Koreans care about this issue, but what I can't figure out is why the Japanese do. They will probably never have the opportunity to control the island, and withdrawing their claim would immensely improve ROK-Japan relations.

Here's the picture. Thoughts?

Well, one thought is that the ROK government didn't put this up. It says 중구, which at most means it was local administrative ward 중구청 that put it up. Hardly represents national government policy.

I live in NYC, and actually work like 3 blocks from Koreatown, and pass by it almost daily. I've yet to see anyone pass these out. I'm sorta sad actually. I would have figured the K-town strip would have been the prime place they would have handed these out.
