UN Asked To Be Involved In Cheonan Investigation

» by in: North Korea

What is the UN going to do for this investigation?:

President Lee Myung-bak said yesterday that foreign experts and the United Nations would join Korean investigators in probing the sinking of the Cheonan last month, in order to ensure a thorough and objective study.

Speaking to members of the Korean Senior Citizens Association at a Blue House luncheon, Lee said halfhearted efforts wouldn’t get the job done.

“Experts from developed nations and the United Nations will together carry out painstaking investigations,” Lee was quoted as saying by the Blue House. “They will come up with findings that no one can ever refute, and the government will take firm measures as necessary.”

Addressing speculation surrounding the sinking, Lee reiterated the importance of “credibility.”

“We need to produce scientific and meticulous findings that can be trusted by the international community,” the president said.

On Tuesday, Lee called for a civilian expert to take the helm of the joint investigative team of military and civilian figures probing the cause of the sinking. Currently, Army Lt. Gen. Park Jung-yi is heading the team.  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

It seems like President Lee is just trying to add one more third party to the mix to make the investigation appear unbiased when they eventually announce that it had to be a outside explosion that sunk the ship likely from the North Koreans.

Sounds good to me. Although no amount of hard evidence is going to convince some people.

    Imagine this scenario.

The ship is leaky and experiencing increasing problems… and a lot of people know it. For that reason, they stick close to land while on patrol so, in the event of a catastrophic failure, it can be intentionally run aground.

Suddenly, the ship springs a leak in the aft section. The crew, unable to stop it, seals waterproof doors in an attempt to isolate the leak.

The sealed and flooding section fills with water while the rest of the ship maintains buoyancy. This puts tremendous strain on the ship…and eventually, it all gives way with much noise and movement, the water-filled rear-section breaks off and sinks quickly.

The front of the ship stays afloat for some time before sinking.

None of the surviving crew have any injuries consistent with an explosion.

    Wait for it…

Chickenhead if this is the case than this has to be one of the greatest examples of military incompetence I have ever seen. Plus it should be easy to determine in an investigation that this is what happened.

No argument from me. Insuring the world before issuing a statment that the North may be the culprit would be the wise way to go.

So now you run the UN too? You're going to tell the UN what to do?

We are the major finance arm of the UN. We SHOULD tell them what to do.

But in reality, I believe the US should kick them out. The UN is useless and a waste of finances.

I'm sure the Security Counsel would be interested given that China and the United States, two of its permanent members, are bound by defense agreements to participate if war broke out between North and South Korea.
