Golf writer Dan Jenkins mistakes Y.E. Yang for Chinese Restaurant Chain

Twitter is going to be the death of some journalists. Dan Jenkins is 80-years-old and the most famous living golf writer in the United States. A year ago he took up tweeting and he did this all through last weekend’s Masters.

One of his tweets has landed Jenkins in trouble.

South Korean Y.E. Yang is only the defending PGA Champion. He won it by defeating Tiger Woods in the final round. That Jenkins can’t show him a modicum of respect for that accomplishment says a great deal for golf writers as a whole. I will get to that in a minute.

Yang tweeted back the following a few days later.

After receiving several complaint letter, Jenkins’ employer Golf Digest Magazine, issued the following-

Dan Jenkins’ Masters tweet about Y.E. Yang generated several letters of protest. Jenkins’ reference was intended to play off the PGA champion Y.E. Yang’s name and the P.F. Chang’s restaurant chain. We removed it from our archive and apologize for any offense. Certainly none was intended.

Jenkins didn’t issue an apology. Even though it would be quite easy to do it on Twitter.  Why wouldn’t he do this? Because he don’t find his comment offensive at all. I’ve been a credentialed member of the media at two golf tournaments. At one of them I heard a golf writer making fun of one of the Asian players.(Either Yani Tseng or Young Kim) Jenkins is a legend in the field of golf reporting, he was just tweeting something most of his brethren  is thinking in private.

Despite a women's league, Tiger Woods, and the recent Korean wave, isn't the world of golf still pretty much an old boys club?

YE Yang doesn't write his twitters, since he doesn't speak English. His management team writes them for him.

I would imagine he knows some English, seeing as he lives in Texas.
