This is something that many USFK units participate in to help local Korean schools:
Seven volunteers from USAG-Humphreys visited Cheongdam Middle School in Anjeong-ri recently to participate in the school’s English Village program. The school’s program is an English camp that promotes the Korean students’ English-speaking ability and is part of the Good Neighbor Program, http://www.goodneighbor.or.kr.
The year-round program has been met with success and many students participate in the program even during their winter breaks.
“It is fun. The Yut-nori game, quiz and speaking English with foreigners are great for me to overcome my shyness of speaking English,” said Kim, Young-suk, an eighth grader who wants to be a nurse when she’s older. “This is my third time participating (in the class) and I will continue to participate. I like encouraging my other classmates to come and enjoy the class.”Adrie Erasmus, the school’s native English teacher from South Africa said, “The program is useful and students get an opportunity to talk to other English speakers.
“It would be better if we could get regular volunteers to come each week, and not different volunteers each time…that way the students get more comfortable talking to them, as they are very shy,” she added. [Camp Humphreys PAO]
The problem with having the same soldiers is that usually more soldiers want to help out than what is needed so they are rotated so everyone gets a chance to help out.
