The LPGA is playing just its fifth tournament of 2010.
Honolulu’s Michelle Wie birdied eight of her first 16 holes en route to a 6-under 67 today to vault into the lead at the Tres Marias Championships in Morelia, Mexico.
Wie, who shot a 7-under 66 Thursday and was three shots back entering today’s second round, overtook first-round leader Ai Miyazato with a birdie barrage before stumbling at the end with bogeys on the 17th and 18th.
Wie’s two-round total is 13-under 133, two shots ahead of Brittany Lincicome and three ahead of Miyazato.
On the front nine, Wie, a Punahou alum and Stanford student, birdied holes Nos. 2 (par 4), 5 (par 5), 6 (par 3), 8 (par 5), 9 (par 4).
She birdied holes Nos. 10 (par 5), 12 (par 4), 16 (par 5) on the back. Wie bogeyed Nos. 17 (par 4) and 18 (par 5).
Lincicome shot a 6-under 67 today for a two-round total of 11-under 135. Her round included an ace on the par-3 13th. She followed that with her lone bogey on the par-3 14th. She also birdied five holes.
Miyazato, who recorded 10 birdies and no bogeys yesterday, had four birdies and four bogeys and shot and even-par 73 for a two-round total of 10-under 136.- Honolulu Advertiser
Wie must like playing in Mexico. She won the Lorena Ochoa invitational in Guadalajara last November.
It is way too early to get excited about a Wie victory which would provide a big boost to the LPGA. Ai Miyazato has already won twice this year. Brittany Lincicome the 2009 Kraft Nabisco champion, a favorite player of mine*, is in second. Na Yeon Choi, a tw0-time winner in 2009, is 4 shots back. It would be a great tournament to watch this weekend, but it is not on television.
In other LPGA news, the tour will play a exhibition event in Brazil next month. The tour played a similar event in Brazil last year. This could become a full fledged event in 2011.
*- I chose Lincicome to be the 2009 LPGA comeback player of the year. At least one golf blogger, who I respect, thought my selection was foolish.
